I meant "us" in a general people on the internet etc sort of way rather than us as in urban or on this thread.

I like it - the album and the whole idea - feels like being part of something.
(yeah, I know that probably sounds fucking stupid)

This the first time had the chance to listen to one of their albums without having seen pages of professional writers anylising it first.

I went to a RH gig with a big banner that said "NUDE FOR AMR" and they played it for us (AMR) :)

I paid £5 for the download - not sure if I'll buy the cd yet, will give it a few more listens...

So far 'Weird Fishes' and 'All I Need' are working for me :)

I'm more than happy to pay for their work, and I'm looking forward to the day the middle man is finally removed from the equation.

Bring on the revolution ;)

it is really good idea and kudos to radiohead for taking the internetz and music another step ahead. it is a display of power, too.

but i will not download this in 160. i can distinguish my 160s from my 320s. the 160 sound is crippled and you cant play it really loud.

it is less pronounced in rock music though - rock is noisy by nature. ;)

I really can't understand why people are moaning about the downloads "only" being 160kbps. This is arguably the biggest and best band on the planet giving away their music before any record company get their hands on it. Be fucking grateful! If this was just coming out straight to CD in 2008, and a 48kpbs rip had been leaked then everyone wpuld be creaming their pants.

Right, so you've "lost faith" in Radiohead for giving you their music for free? that doesn't make any sense. And anyone who is causing "outcry" over the low quality can shut the fuck up because, get this, it's free! And you think Radioheads die hard fans will be upset because they're all audiophiles and will demand higher quality. Well, that makes sense. Or at least, would, if it weren't for the fact that it's coming out on CD in 2008 (the original release date) and true "fans" will buy a hard copy.

Still don't see how anyone can complain.

I rip stuff at 160kbps and I'm a rh fan, and it sounds fine to me. Audiophiles can go fondle their gold plated speaker cable.

I think you've missed the point the OP was making. The download wasn't 'FREE' for a lot of people (ie, their dedicated fans). If it was free for anyone it was more than likely the casual fan or people just wanting to see what the fuss is about.

Point is, they've shafted their true fans. And I cant figure out why - would it have been that hard to release it at 192 (minimum)?

Oh FFS you boys are really up your own arses. I'm a 'true fan'. I've got every single album in the order they were released and I've seen them play loads of times.

And I think it's an ace thing to do. This 'you're only a proper fan if you can distinguish between two slightly different sound qualities which any normal human won't be able to hear the difference between unless they have a fantastic mofo hifi system' gets right on my tits

It was only not free if you opted to pay for it. Whether you paid for it or not is irrelevant really, the point is that they're willing to give it away.

I can't see why you think they've shafted their true fans. I've bought every Radiohead album and count myself as a true fan, and i certainly don't feel shafted at having the chance to hear their new album 6 months before it's out in the shops.

What a bizarre argument.

Band gives away an entire album for free several months before the CD is released. Tracks are all above the average quality of most commercial download services. The quality is such that most experts concur that the average punter is very unlikely to notice the difference between these downloads and a CD release.

And, crucially, these free, better quality than average tracks come with NO DRM, can be played on absolutely anything and are totally legal. And yet you conclude that their fans have been "shafted"!!!!

If getting a brand new, reasonable quality album with no digital rights management for absolutely fuck all counts as a rip off in your world, what's your thoughts on iTunes? Now that must come close to being the Crime of the Century for you, no?

I'm not a techy person so I might be wrong, but wouldn't higher quality recordings cost them more in terms of bandwidth, and reduce the number of downloads their servers would be able to handle?

How come The Crimea giving away a whole album with nobody (even if they wanted to) having to pay for it before and after the cd release, in only 128kbs, didn't get this level of attention &/or outcry?

Do you think it could be anything to do with the fact that they aren't one of the biggest bands in the world?

probably :D
but any coverage I saw about it thought it was a good thing but I see now they/I shoud've been attacking them for ripping off their fans :p
