I like the way they say goodnight to you at the end. Sometimes they even say "sleep tight" or "pleasant dreams" which is really nice.

Have to turn it down while they play the National Anthem though

I do that, and congratulate myself if I mange to turn the volume up again at the prcise moment that the pips start :)

And, like you, the "sleep tight" makes me feel all cosy and safe   :o

And I really like the shipping forecast - like poetry, it is.

A few things on R4 annoy me at times, e.g. Woman's Hour, You and Yours, but on the whole it's excellent.

Eddie Mair bestrides the airwaves as a collossus of our age and TMS is manna from heaven. In Our Time is about the closest thing to proper intellectual broadcasting.

Indeed.

Woman's Hour used to be pretty good until the mid-90's then it transformed itself into a "Aren't all men stupid" programme, of the sort often found on telly (Loose Women).

I usually turn it on at dinner time (when 'you & yours' is on) so it's brain damage for me. I try to avoid the Archers, the afternoon play, the quiz shows and the tax avoidance advice shows but I like most of the rest.

I remember as a young girl being told that if the shipping forecast wasn't broadcast, it was a 'sign' that the world had gone to nuclear war. So my Radio 4 habit was born of teenage irrational terror and has continued on and off ever since.

i listen to it while i wash up, but my boyfriend tells me i am a middle class liberal for doing so. this is fine however, i can take his cheap shots :)
