Rachel Unthank / Devon Sproule

janeb

WW Tyrion do?
So, I really love Devon Sproule and should have seen her play last Friday at the Cluny in Newcastle but a very loud fuse blew and the venue had to be evacuated, Devon sang one song unaccompanied regardless which was great but even so, a bit of a pisser.

Have tickets to see Rachel Unthank and the Winterset at the Sage this Sunday (great Northumbrian folk, highly recommend) and who do I just find out is supporting her? Yes, Devon Sproule :D :D

Am very excited

not a British folk fan at all, and not convinced by a lot of the 'modern' folk boom either, but I'm absolutely blown away by the Rachel Unthank album.. I think it's because it takes that kind of North-East folk style and puts it in really varied musical settings (some songs sound like French cabaret or even gypsy music, the piano really adds flavour).. Absolutely bloody marvellous.

She's from Pie Eye's home town, kinda, as well (nearest place of any size to where she's from at any rate)..

I saw Rachel Unthank at the Spitz last week, and she was so good I'm off to see her again in Islington on 1 Nov. A rare trip north of the river for me, so she must be worth it.

are there still tickets for that show do you know?
must confess, her and the Winterset did an acapella song on Robert Elms last week while Pie Face and I were eating my birthday lunch.

It was so beautiful she burst into tears and I only just didn't...

Tickets here are £10...will buy some tomorrow and save the booking fee. I missed seeing them at endoftheroadfestival 2 weeks ago but I do like what I have heard/read.

She / the Winterset are amazing aren't they - seen them 5 times now in the last 2 years and they just get better. I think Becky has an amazing voice as well and when she sings the sone of the whaler (My Donald) I always cry - in particular at the fiddle / piano passage towards the end that is the most evocative sound of a storm that I've ever heard. And their version of Sea Song is sublime - next seeing them in December back home in Newcastle

If Devon is still supporting it's worth missing a pint to get to see her - unfortunately not with B J Cole this time (as far as I know, it was just her and her guitar at the Sage the other weekend) but if you get the chance you should listen again to Radcliffe and Marconie from this Monday (I think), she played live with B J Cole and she was awesome - link here

Right, I've bought a ticket for Magpie's Nest too as I've been meaning to (a) go there and (b) see Rachel etc for ages, so 2 birds with one stone. If they're doing floorspots, you may have to suffer seeing me play too.

BJ Cole is a genius :)

Yes, when she had to cancel the gig at the Cluny a couple of weeks ago (see OP) I was as gutted that we wouldn't see him as much as we wouldn't see her, he was wearing a spectacular shirt :)
