Rachel Unthank And The Winterset - The Bairns

well i'm going to be up there a couple of days without Pie Face - she has to come back down to work - so you never know :)

I wasn't sure if I'd like them or not, but I thought they were great. They were much more of a traditional folk club act than I was expecting - primarily traditional material, telling funny stories between songs, singalong bits - these are the hallmarks of your folk club band. The last two are things I struggle with myself as I'm not very good at being "entertaining" - having Belinda the keyboard player in the band must be a godsend for them from that point of view.

I really like the regional thing they've got going on, and the clog dancing was great. Blue Bleezin Blind Drunk is an interesting song... it's about domestic violence but it got a first verse added to it in recent times which explains that the woman married for money, and therefore implies that she had it coming... I learnt it to sing myself at one point but it didn't quite fit me.

Was slightly embarrassing being the only person doing open mike :o

at least you didn't do 5 or 6 songs that sounded exactly the same

He meant well that bloke but god he was boring.

Anyway - The Winterset were fucking marvellous I thought. Maybe I don't know the scene very well and that's why it hit me so hard but that was one of my top 5 gigs ever (a list I'm currently compiling :D). The harmonising and clog dancing and a cello!! all made me very happy, plus they made me proud of my home too. So a good evening all round, barely ruined by a timely bout of cystitis :D

You should all go and buy the album now - all of you. I'm going to get several and give them away as gifts this xmas. Better than Quality Street any day.

Yep - I was blown away by Rachel and the Winterset last night...amazing.

I don't think I've ever CRIED at a gig before, but I really had to concentrate just to stop myself from wailing! :D - a couple of the songs, both about bairns, just really touched to the core.

They are all incredible musicians, and their arrangement/composition is astounding.

One of the best gigs I've ever been to, evereverver. I'd really like to catch them again.

Ruby - you rocked the house too - everyone hushed right up for your lovely singing and hurdy set and it went down a storm!

did wonder where you were - sorry you missed it. now look away for your own good...

right.

that was one of the most beautiful things i've ever seen. I felt really self-conscious about welling up at one of the songs, then looked forward and saw Pie Face and others doing the same. Just the most wonderful, moving stuff - and then funny as fuck between songs.

Ruby put in a gorgeous floor slot too - and rocked the house!!!

Sounds good, she has got a gorgeous voice and that northumbrian almost scottish accent suits the music so well. Pie and I (haha gettit?) should do a duo

I keep my eyes open at the Sage for her but she's entertain southern ponces. :(

2 gigs in our area in December - I'm going to see her /them on the 1st in County Durham (see earlier post) and then on the 2nd they're at the new 'in the round' venue in the Ouseburn just by the Cluny - I'd go then as well but have tickets for June Tabor at the Sage :)

Never have the hairs on the back of my neck stood up for so long as when I saw June Tabor in Oxford a few years back. Her voice has just kept getting better & better as well.

She is amazing, first saw her prob about 22 years ago in a folkclub in Great Eccleston (Nr Preston) and then next saw her about 18 months ago also near Preston in a village hall in Longridge - she was on tour and a fan from the area contacted her and asked if she'd play on her way around, and she did  She makes me cry because of the beauty of her voice

Have now lost my tickets for Dec 2, but contacting the Sage tomorrow to (hopefully) get duplicates - if not, I'll have to buy more - better that than not see her.

Sounds right up my street........will get the album post-haste.

Looking at the track listing, can I assume that "Minor Place" is a cover of the Bonnie Prince Billy track?

:)

One more thing - I can find a torrent of this (and obviously I can't find it in the shops here in Sand-Land) so I was going to buy on iTunes........

Happily enough, it is available on iTunes plus - DRM free, high(er) quality MP3s which is nice.

The only thing is, it professes to be the "clean" version......and I can't see an option for an "unclean" version.

Is there an element of bawdiness/profanity etc on the album which may well have been edited out? If so I might hold off as I can't stomach shelling out cash for a censored version...

:(

Hm - some detective work reveals:

In order to follow the very letter of the RIAA directives on ratings etc, any modification to a rated album (including the ordering of the tracks as well as the addition of new or remixed tracks etc) from it's originally submitted format necessitates the addition of the "Clean" label from iTunes in order to signify that the modifications have not changed the song content in any way which breaches the original RIAA rating.

As the download on the iTunes seems to have an additional track or two slipped in, I reckon this is probably why it has the "clean" rating.

So yeah - I will get this when I go home to lunch.
