R.I.P Thistle

R.I.P. Thistle :( One of my cats has had a couple of fits in the last 3 weeks but that's probably going to be another thread soon :(

She was a British Guernsey - so are the ones in the background. Slightly cheaper then G. Guerneys but very similar indeed. I'll be sad when we lose Doris the sheep but we don't interact with the sheep the same way as we do with the goats so yeah, it's tougher :(

Have you been keeping goats long?

One the most useful books I bought was Diseases of the Goat by John Matthews. It's especially useful if you get a vet who doesn't know a lot about goats specifically, which seems alarmingly common. That and Goat Husbandry by Mackenzie and Goodwin were recommended to me as the two 'goaty bibles'.

Thanks :)

We've had goats for nearly seven years but that disease book may well be useful

Wow! I wondered why your username was Goatherd. Seems like it does what it says on the tin.

RIP Thistle. Hope you're chomping on St Pete's robes as we speak :)

Those pictures are so asking to be lolgoated in loving memory. Just love the expression on her face in the second picture, it just screams contented goat :)

Sympathies Madz :(

£30?

Those fallen stock regs are an utter fucker. It wouldnt cost that to take a live animal to slaughter.

(Can't see the harm in burying em anyway)

I got into keeping goats a long time back when I was depressed and unemployed and needed unavoidable routine and responsibility. Goats are amazing little creatures and fresh raw goat milk is so nice.

This thread made me a bit weepy. I lost my first two goats in a matter of days from 'old age' at 12 years. One had the goat equivalent of a stroke and had to be put down, the other already had cancer and collapsed the next day. Presumably the shock of losing her sister was too much. Goats are something else, they're not like sheep or cattle. I've had a sheep go and been a bit upset for a day, but losing the goats left me honestly distraught. I'm not generally soft about that sort of thing either.

So, yeah, I'm doubly sorry to hear about Thistle, Madzone. :( If there's ever anything I might be able to help with goat health wise, then do PM me.

I'm not posting pictures of my goats here, but anyone who wants to see some can PM me for the secret URL.

RIP Thistle. What a lovely face she had!

My grandma had a little goat when I was a child - I loves 'em. Our dream is to have a large garden to retire our campervan to when it's rusted beyond repair, and let goats live in it.

I can kind of see the point if there's loads of cows or summat and they're getting buried on a water course but lambs and shit? You can bury a great dane but not a new born lamb - well done Defra! :D

Speaking of Defra, they lost our 2008 TB test results, assumed we hadn't had it done and put us on movement resrictions. Trouble is they forgot to tell us, so we've been under a movement ban for a year but we didn't know :D We've had two new cattle on the holding and had one go to slaughter, all while we were banned from moving cattle on and off the holding  They really are fucking idiots.

Can you PM me the url? I like looking at other people's goats :)

They are very easy to get attached to aren't they? They have such strong personalities.

Nice to see the system working as per usual.

We still get the recorded movement restriction messages for cattle, despite not having had any since 2006.
