Quorn Roast

Is fucking brilliant. Brilliant as a roast, brilliant in sandwiches. I notice that supplies dwindle away at this time of year though and I wanted to say "what balls!"

Anyone else a fan? I realise I haven't left much scope for discussion here. Anyone got any Quorn Roast related anecdotes? Call me a twat?

There are certain things I've vowed never to do in this life.

After having done it once, I will never again go to a Jack In The Box, and shout into a clown's face for my food.

Neither will I ever eat something called 'quorn'.

What the fuck is it, soylent green?

'Quorn nuggets'. I feel an episode of violence coming on...

Nah, Soylent Green is people. SOYLENT GREEN IS PEOPLE!!!!! Quorn is just nice, wholesome, fungus that can be used in biological warfare.

AS a family we rely on quorn quite a lot. You lot have just made me feel ill.

FFS is this just another scare story? you decide. I've got an headache with this though...

Well, you could always put your faith in those nice people at Astra Zeneca and their remarkable tale of how they stumbled upon Quorn. Or you can read up about fusarium from a range of scientific sources. Make your own mind up, but I wouldn't treat Quorn as anything other than an occasional meal option - it's made of weirdo fungus tendrils via an intensive industrial process after all.

I did like Sadken's description though:

'Quorn is just nice, wholesome, fungus that can be used in biological warfare'
:D

I'm not saying quorn is from a natural source-far from it-but it is low fat, I find it pleasant tasting and there is nothing to say that is is bad for you. I would very much like to know if the people against it, eat meat or smoke? The first is far more ethically dubious than any bit of manufactured material, the second, so incredibly more likely to kill or harm you.
A bit of quorn in your sandwich as a veggie, i find better as an occasional treat than calorific hummus or fatty cheese and a welcome change. Have two jobs which require me to be out of the house all day every day and never sit down in my physically demanding job so fuck it, I will eat a quorn steak and love it when arrive home shattered, starving and not got the time, ingredients or effort to make a lentil mousakka. I can not see how it is worse than a Dominos pizza or a Burger King which I would never touch as find them so unhealthy AND foul!
And lets not even go into how quorn as a manufactured entity does not rape the third world like meat, soya and a lot of veg...
As a vegetarian, i do not go on threads about the best sausage and post up pictures of pigs being slaughtered-tis bad form.
But some are doing the same on a thread which is not 'Is Quorn Bad?' but asking about the taste of quorn roast.
I said myself in previous ignored posts that the history of quorn was not mushrooms frolicking in fields-my ex worked on its manufacture but still eats it!
It is nice to share debate and knowledge but being sanctimonious is something veggies are 'meant' to be-there are far worse things in the world to get upset about than food in which nothing is killed for. I probably eat more veg than most people but is nice to have a different texture and taste once in a while. To go on about people eating quorn every day is the same as being concerned about a meat eater who will only eat steak. Most people eat a bit of a lot. There are exceptions to the rule but there always are to pretty much everything. What food is great ethically, nutritiously, healthy, easy to prepare, can be a meal in itself, has never contained pesticides, has not been flown in, people exploited for etc etc?
No-one is perfect, no food is perfect. To go on about quorn whilst battery chickens etc still exist seems somewhat selfish and pointless.

Me I just buy the Quorn mince. It makes the best spag bol in the world where you can taste the herbs and spices better than in a meat one. I don't go in for 'value added' foods.

Aha !! Someone gave me a new pack of Quorn mince last week ! I tossed it in the freezer..... It looked like bits of dried cardboard to me and I have no idea how to prepare/cook it.
How do you cook it,please ?? Do I need to add water to it,to 'bring it to life' ?? Is it any good ??
Help appreciated here...:)

I reckon it's a scare story with a grain of truth.

Quorn can be used in biological warfare. Well, potatoes contain solanine, which is addictive and can kill you - they're closely related to deadly nightshade. Other foods have dangerous effects if eaten in very large quanities, it's not just Quorn.

So I guess eating a quorn fillet and chips is more daring than eating fugu prepared by a novice. :D And people say vegetarians aren't tough!

You make it sound like a sea monkey!
There are instructions on the pack-I fry onion, garlic, mushroom and then lots of veg, add some quorn mince and a tad more oil-stir fry and then add my own sauce which is tinned/fresh tomatoes, a splash of balsamic vinegar, a bit of sugar and fresh/dried herbs of choice. Making food is instinctive imo-add what you have/feel like adding-don't feel you have to keep to a recipe or even try one. I recommend mushroom ketchup, brown sauce and a lot of red wine but then again I have those in most meals I make:cool:
Quorn mince can be drunkenly/easily made by frying it, adding a few veg or beans esp kidney beans, spices if poss, then generic sauce, then slathered over nachos with cheese.

argh...I can't find the sage n onion realate roast anywhere. In past few days I have been in Sainsburys, Waitrose, Tesco and 2 health food shops and nada. I really wanted it for dinner tomorrow.

I don't think you can get a flavoured one, MT, just a plain one.

I just revived this to say "Quorn roast sandwiches are the bomb".

hmmm, this is a very good post.

point taken about the sausage thread, and not putting up pictures of pig slaughter etc. I choose not to eat quorn myself, but I dont' bang on about the evils of killing pigs on sausage threads, while i'd feel perfectly okay about saying why I don't eat quorn on these types of threads. so, I'm asking myself why this is...

1. i'd get mercilessly flamed on any sausage thread by meat-eaters... and it's not worth the drama
2. quorn threads are generally by veggies, who are a more tolerant lot all round (;))
3. the evils of the meat trade are widely known, and yet chosen to be ignored by those who still eat it, whilst the intricasies of quorn manufacture may not be known by those who choose to eat it, and so this information may be of interest.

not trying to justify making these points on this thread, just going through my own rationale :)

No you can get a sage n onion stuffed one...not by quorn but similar and tastier. i can't even find a quorn one...:(

Quorn's filth. Not only does it look and taste foul, it's the Walker's Crisps of the veggie food section - my local shop used to sell Cauldron, Wicken Fen, and loads of other smaller brands' products that didn't try to imitate meat in the vegetarian section, but they've all been squeezed out by Quorn.

It's like when you go to a buffet at a wedding, and all the carnies take all the veggie food because they want to 'just try it', and there's nowt left for the vegetarians except some cress garnish.

Quorn roast: the only form of quorn that can be effectively used to batter the crap out of your mortal enemies.

I have one in the oven. I'm kinda wondering wtf I'm going to do once it's done. It can be... quite a lot... of moderately flavoursome, dry protein based substance.

HMM.

They've recently changed the recipe for quorn pieces. They're now clearly just chopped up from a big block (rather than being individually formed pieces before), and they melt in your mouth rather than having a firmer texture. I do not approve. I was rather fond of quorn pieces before this change. I mean, I'll still get them because there's no alternative. Bastards.
