Quirks of Your Vehicle

I have a 16 year old Aluminium grey VW Golf.

The locks have issues. Sometimes I have to turn the engine on and rev the engine for a bit too get the car to lock. The back left door won't open at all now. The boot won't always unlock from the key. Have to unlock it from inside the car.
The clutch pedal has to be helped up at times and sticks a bit of I'm not careful.
None of the internal lights work how they should.

I have a beautiful Brera and despite Alfa's of a certain vintage being noted for their quirks, she has been good.
Once or twice I have had the odd issue with the electric windows opening a litte and not being able to close them and once or twice I have had diffuculty unlocking her, which I really can't fathom.
The electric fob simply refuses to work and no it is not a battery thing. I end up walking around the car near and close by from differnt angles until I can get it to work.
Its a mystery.

You can reset your window controls to stop that happening - a common thing I think, look it up. The locking, I don't know. Maybe the radio aerial in your fob is detached or damaged.

The locking is simply a quirk, maybe even effected by nearby radio signals or some such thing.
The windows first happened when new to the car while driving on a dual carriageway, when it started raining :)
After patience, playing with switches Etc. It just cleared up.

corsa (automatic  )

it doesn't start properly - it started this crap in the summer, so it's not the weather. First start, run starter motor and half depress ignition - leave to run. If reversing or doing slow manoeuvres it will stall as soon as handbrake is released, due to lack of gas. When car is finally pointing the right way (between 1 and five stalls + restarts) it will now be fine.

If, however it didn't stall at least once, it will now stall at the first junction / give way sign...
Now it will take all kinds of welly to restart, leading to fears of knackering starter motor.

i deduce it's some kind of fuel injection prob... but can't afford to get it sorted. My old Mini had a choke - you know where you are with a choke...
I have absolutely no recall of this problem. I drove the bloody thing for a while after this, too. About a year. Bloody memory.

Anyway, my current motor is a Kia picanto. It sometimes struggles to go into reverse, gets horrific condensation/ice on the insides of the windows overnight, and as of this winter, if it's frosty, the driver's door lock will only open and close with the key, so you have to get in, start the car, open the window, stop the car so you can use the key to retract the door lock enough to let the door actually close, and then start the car again and close the window. And do it all again in reverse when you get out.

My current car doesn't have much in the way of quirks. The worst that it does is have the check engine light on nearly all the time. I've had it checked many times and there is no fault present. Sometimes it spontaneously turns off, only to come back on the next tie the car is started, or, sometimes, several days later. I've stopped worrying about it. The engine starts quietly, runs for about five minutes with no problem, then gets seriously rattly for a few minutes, then settles down and runs perfectly for the rest of the day. I use to worry a lot about the problem, but I'm used to it now, and, as the mechanics keep telling me, there's no fault present when it is put on the diagnostics.

I was actually meaning to post on this thread already, to the effect that "my car's only quirk is that it's TOTALLY AWESOME"

Was considering your totally awesome transport earlier and your equally awesome pup. As she grows you may wish to invest in one of these:

Keeps our boot nice and clean and stops the bumper getting scratched from puppy-paws...

I've bought a boot guard / puppy barrier thing to go across the back seats, got a rubber washable boot floor. And a washable dog bed to go on top of it :)

That cover you've got though - Looks useful, where did you get it?

These people: Car Mats, Seat Covers and Pet Travel Accessories | Custom made and personalised products - Premier Products custom designed for each model, so you can access the cubbyhole in the side of the boot (ours is full of tennis balls for the mutt) and the flap is brilliant for stopping scratches, last car was quite badly scratched from the dog's talons as she jumped in and out.

My car has no quirks, it's perfect in every respect.

I believe the honorable twentythreedom has a similarly perfect vehicle.
Not what your MOT histories say:

REASONS FOR FAILURE

All indicators U/S
Horn sounds intermittently
Front numberplate obscured by other vehicle
Suspension dangerous
O/S/F seat obstructed by arsehole

ADVISORIES

Opened boot, cyclist climbed out, ran away
Your home is at risk if you do not keep up repayments

No quirks at all. It does exactly what it should when it should. If it didn't, I'd change it.
Actually this isn't quite true. There is a quirk, but one which is common to most Mercedes drivers.

The car does not have a handbrake. The parking brake is operated by a foot pedal just to the left of where the clutch pedal would be. To release the brake you pull a handle on the bottom right of the dash. It takes a bit of getting used to and I often find myself trying to operate a non-existent foot brake on hire cars.

The screen wash on my car is annoying - I have to pump it 3 or 4 times to get it to work, and then when it does the jets are too powerful and the water flies over my car and ends up cleaning the windscreen of the car behind

If you have to pump it then the non-return valve has failed or been removed. As for going over the roof, you can probably adjust the jet angle although you might find it becomes less powerful with the valve fixed.

I've got a 'R' registration MGF (19 years old) and it's always had this little quirk where, a couple of times a year, the power steering warning light clicks on. There's no reason for it and no special circumstances: waiting at a road junction, cruising round country lanes, tootling in town, barrelling down the motorway.

Anytime, anywhere: a little 'click' noise and it lights up.....

If I ignore it, the power steering dies and the thing becomes a ton weight to haul about. But if I just pull over and turn off the ignition and then turn it back on again, it clears and the car becomes OK again for the next 6 months or so.

My garage can't fix it. It's just a funny electrical quirk.

Funny car quirk - the rear windscreen wiper operates for five swipes when the car is locked / unlocked (but not every time, just almost all of them).

I've just had to have a replacement front windscreen (some waggon dropped a tiny lump of X overboard which bounced up and dunched me). I warned the fitter, and demonstrated but he said that it still made him jump ...

My Allegro wouldn't start, then when I got it running it wouldn't run hot, I took the air filter off and it ran great but wouldn't start from cold. Back to square one. Miraculously I sold it for what I had paid which was amazing.

Nah, the salesman saw me coming, it was more like £500 :hmm:

Back when tax transferred with the vehicle most cars with 12 months MOT & Road tax were £500 iirc

:)
