quick release saddles

Quick release stuff is really attractive to thieves...
I've just ahd to replace a seat and suspension seat post

Got it sorted. I was trying to tighten it while closed. I opened the lever and it tightened up properly. Cheers weepiper, even though your advice was a tad cryptic, it did help! :)

I have a quick release saddle - used to take it off when I went into shops, but it's not very practical. I've got a seat lock now though so I lock it up instead.

It wasn't cryptic, it was plain as day :D

This is the sort of thing that's really hard to describe in text though, and would have been the work of 10 seconds to actually show you in person, eh.

I used to have one, but people kept stealing the seat. I didn't like hauling the stupid seat everywhere, so I got one, and just bolted the fucker on.

This thread has proper made my day :)

Glad it's sorted, Blagsta :D

For mountain bikes, sometimes you want the saddle up and other times its easier with the saddle down.

My folding bike has a quick release saddle as it won't fold properly unless the saddle is quite high. Doesn't slip though.

Make sit easier to get in the boot of a car as well.

my quick release saddle has an allen key that tightens the collar. so you just need to gently tighten that up every few weeks really. it means there's less nickable stuff on your bike and it does appear to look less nickable as a result imo. whereas for the wheels, i've got some of them funny bolts, which are like quick release but they ain't, they have a unique key which you can stick on your keyring and fit on a standard spanner.

It's no use in London but it probably stops 90% of thieves who are just opportunists - pop the lever and walk away.

I'd be really really cautious about relying on that. Two seconds work with a pair of wire cutters, if that.

Nothing will stop a thief who is well equipped and determined - as mauvais says, it is designed more to stop an opportunist who might be walking past and notice a quick release lever.
