Quick Q - citing/referencing in uni essay

Finally got the referencing sorted and then had another battle on my hands over the word count.

The tutor seems to think that the bibilography should count toward your total number of words - have you ever heard such a thing?!

Anyway, he has backed down which is just as well as I was pushing over the word limit anyway!
There's no good reason that a bibliography or reference list should count towards a word limit.

Having said that, in science concise writing is a very good thing, so if you can express the ideas and evidence clearly and still come in well below the word limit, all the better. I really have to drum that into my students, who are forever thinking that they have to write up to the word limit.

I would seek to reference everything I had used, beside anything else, it will help demonstrate that you have read widely on the topic.
