Queue of over 500 people outside PC World for Windows 7

So far, I'd agree. It's been running very, very smoothly since I originally installed it - apart from when a driver update pushed down by Live Update killed my NIC.

Vista was bloody awful. It improved over time as it was updated, but it was still a resource hog. Also, it has been consistently unstable on my systems, but I do appreciate that that's just anecdotal and mileage for others will vary.

On release though, I couldn't even copy large quantities of small files without Vista hanging. And that was a known issue. I mean c'mon.... file copying? Pretty bloody basic task for an OS!

Another issue I had was Vista corrupting jpegs that were copied to a networked XP machine. After two months of troubleshooting and investigation, I finally gave up on that one, because it was just too bizarre. Finally resolved when a NIC driver update was pushed down the wire (and yes, I had been running the latest Vista compatible chipset drivers from the offset).

Vista sucked upon release, big time. Whether it still sucks is debatable, and certainly more subjective at this stage, but Win 7 is undoubtedly a serious improvement.

If you get a laptop now with Vista on, it's fine.

I agree that on release it was pretty shoddy.

And still remarkably unstable! W7 looks full of win right now...shame I dumped my Vaio for a MAcbook Pro a few months back.

You can still load Win7 into a partition then, just so you can tease yourself with the bad old days of Windows.
;)

I can't say I'm madly keen on Windows 7, but it's alright. There's a bit too much legacy software here at work for us to move quickly off XP in any case.

What's the betting all those people were from an MS PR company to try and generate a 'buzz'.
Unlikely to wildly improbable, I'd say. Queue generation (complete with supplied crash barriers and branded brollies) has never really been Microsoft's thing in the UK.

Either way, there's no denying that there is enormous interest in this new OS and Microsoft seems to have produced a pretty fine product. At last.

Let's hope so. They were drinking in last chance saloon with XP being so long in the tooth and most companies not wanting to touch Vista with a bargepole.

Mind you, they're been whoopin' and a-hivin' fiving in a style that would make Apple fanboys proud in the US!

I'm not sure if the staff went around the block though. That's the money shot.

I've bought stuff from them in the past when I've been passing their store. Maybe I have no self respect.

They sell the full range of Apple computers now too, btw.
:hmm: They've sold Macs for years! I bought my first iMac G3 there in 1998.

Windows 7 is good. Very good.

Vista was also fine.

XP is far too long in to the tooth these days, imho.

I am realising that I may as well go for Windows 7 as XP will be obsolete no doubt in a few years and anything new you buy will probably not be compatible with it. :(

numpty question, sorry - when will retailers be selling laptops with W7 installed? Is it starting from now?

Always better paying a bit more to get John Lewis's superb service and proper 2 yr warranty. Besides £345 for that lappie is well cheap.

You know a lot more about computers than I do. Definitely seems cheap and John Lewis' aftersales are good!

Crisis of overproduction though and I reckon there will continue to be good deals for while.

We've got John Lewis vouchers to use up, so we're tied in but that's no bad thing with their service quality.

I just rang to check, apparently JL Bristol has 60 of those in stock - must be anticipating a lot of buyers for W7 machines.

Why not go for the newer, better product anyway? :confsed:

I suppose I was worrying that W7 might end up with the same reputation as Vista, but thus far, it seems like most people are pretty impressed with it.

I had looked at John Lewis but there's no Acer Aspires. There are a few Toshibas under £500 but Toshiba's not a brand that's got much mention on my thread. Been mentioned a couple of times, and also slated by someone who said they're the bane of their lives :D

The only others under £500 are emachines. I have no idea about that make. There's also an HP and a Sony.

Don't worry about brand. Just make sure the model you choose gets good reviews by Googling it.

I've had nothing but positive experiences with 4 toshiba laptops I've owned over the years.

They invented the laptop.

I'm doing plenty of googling for reviews

Test Freaks
CNet
Laptop Reviews
PC Advisor
Laptop Logic
Reevoo

Where's the best place with the most extensive reviews please?

Gah. By the time you make a decision it'll be the era of thought powered computers and flying cars
:D
Indeed. I'm tempted to organise an urban whipround so she can have £300 extra to buy a Macbook but then that would spawn threads on peripherals, programmes etc so maybe not.
