Qatar World Cup: £3m payments to officials' corruption claim

What I am wondering, who leaked those documents?

I am starting to take the view it was FIFA. I suspect they are already under massive pressure if they wanted to have it in the middle of a domestic season. This was a way to save face and allow them to re-run the vote and have it somewhere else.

I really can't see how outing yourself as completely corrupt saves face for the organisation as a whole.

Although it's quite likely they came from someone within the organisation.

They can distance themselves from their corrupt officials and say they will have stricter checks and balances next time.

It wasn't our fault those officials were corrupt, honest. Lets have a clean and above board vote, sorry Qatar but you shouldn't have offered riches either.

"A few rotten apples" get thrown under the bus, the great and good leaders clean it all up, carry on as normal.

    As Sunray said, basically.

They know they are going to take some shit, but think they can ride it out and have decided its worth the pain. It's a lot less pain than the massive headache they gave themselves offering Qatar the World Cup.

Even in the world of corrupt and stupid decisions, going for Qatar was truly astonishing. Admittedly, Fifa runs with a pretty high baseline stupidity and venality - but when you add in oil money it really is quite impressive what can be achieved. The list above says it all.

Indeed. It might well be that the Russia decision was equally dodgy, but you can at least make a case for having it there, easily enough to at least claim to have voted for them for the right reasons. There's no way you can even begin to for Qatar.

Pretty much, although again it still begs the question quite what they thought they were doing in the first place. Just how delirious/obtuse were they that they thought it wouldn't cause major problems? I suppose just like with everything else they thought they could ride it out.

You have to think if they do get stripped of the tournament Qatar will, in a peverse way, have decent justification for being a bit pissed off - at that level you've got to think any bid comes with a lot of wheel greasing, they just seem to have done it in spectacularly grand fashion and are now being thrown under the bus by FIFA.

I probably won't lose any sleep over it to be honest. Whatever you think of England's world cup bid, it involved a shitload of effort by a shitload of people in good faith that their efforts wouldn't be ignored in favour of whoever greased the most palms. Those people, and their opposite numbers in the other nations that bid for 2016 and 2022, have more justification for being pissed off IMO.

Then you've got the untold millions of football fans who might be justifiably pissed off at having to go and watch their beloved global tournament in some tinpot satrapy where you can get thrown in jail for breathing without due care and attention.

That's presuming they didn't do any greasing of their own. If you start greasing palms, just how put out can you be if someone else does it better? Obviously this is pure speculation and I was really only talking in a "if this turned out to be the case" sort of way, but it certainly wouldn't surprise me at all if it turned out Qatar were not the only federation to be greasing palms.

    Meanwhile, the Davids are upset:

Someone at FIFA at any rate. Doesn't look like Blatter's got any interest in backing down on this.

They died needlessly either way, and the Qataris are responsible either way. Even if their bid wasn't corrupt their treatment of migrant workers should have been enough to strip them of the world cup IMO.

Talk of Blatter standing for a fifth term. There's just no good argument for letting one person hold such a powerful position for so long.

I'm surprised nobody has piped up with, 'it's not a dictatorship, it's an absolute monarchy' yet tbh.

An absolute monarchy is just a dictatorship that has been a dictatorship for a really long time.

Well Blatter has finally come up with an explanation for all this evidence of corruption. We've all imagined it, because we're racist

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/27762435

Now to me it's this sort of statement that's offensive, in that it drags ordinary African people down to the level of the crooks running certain African national football associations. I have seen no evidence of anyone blaming Africa as a whole for this clusterfuck, but rather the handful of named individuals who are implicated as being involved in corrupt practices. Not all of those individuals are African.

Traditionally ultimate responsibility for this sort of corruption should rest with the person at the top of the organisation in question, who last time I checked was a white European guy called Blatter. I fucking hate it when white people play the race card like this, particularly when it's done in a transparent attempt to get their own fat arses out of trouble.

What's Blatter got to say about the 1,000 plus dead building the stadiums in Qatar? Racism, he's the racist POS ignoring their deaths.
