PWEI - crap or not crap?

for me one of those bands that just is the sound track to me being 16, 17 or 18. love them loads. nothing for 8 years and then a gig in brum in jan of this year and all was forgotten. still have the energy and the get up and go that i fell in love with when i was 16. keep going PWEI.

really tricky for me

i like their ideas and everything

but even tho they try really hard, and i like what theyre trying to do, a lot of their stuff is somehow a bit crap :(

undecided

I voted LOL because I know that if I'd listened to them when they were around, I would have loved them. but I didn't, and I feel that they were a band of their time, which I just can't appreciate now.

thought i'd bump this trhead for no other reason than i'm currently having a big poppies phase. got lots of their stuff on my little shuffle, great to listen to on the way to work. good songs indeed, and not just for nostalgia value

Nice bump ...

I've recently bought the debut singles from Vileevils (Adam and Graham Poppie), Fucking and Fighting, which improves with a few plays. It was one of the songs that the reformed PWEI were going to record/release before Clint went back to his gold plated LA mansion :-)

[PS woo hoo, 100 posts in 3 years. I'm a great believer in the difference between quantity and quality]

Well done with the thread resurrecting! Growing up just outside Stourbridge in the 80s-90s, Neds, PWEI and the Wonderstuff made life worth living. :)

<unashamed at lumping together like that>

Good t-shirts...have about 5 albums somewhere if anyone wants them as bought into the whole this lot are cool and could never ever get into them....derrrr:)

The sultans of ping on the other hand....

Sultans of Ping fucking ROCKED!

Found an old 'Godfodder' tshirt the other day, and it still (kind of ) fits me!

unfunny self-consciously 'wacky' student shite (and i felt the same when i was a student myself)

What the fuck? You still think Richie Edwards is alive. :p

(Or you did a bit back, anyway. ;))

i wouldn't say that they were "wacky" at all, really. yeah, they pissed around and had fun, and they didn't take themselves too seriously, but wacky? nah...

we were talking on the weekend about when we went to watch them at the Powerhouse in the angel back in 1990 or so.

they were so good, my mate fell off the table top dancing along to Can U Dig It?

the poppies rocked it proper

They were ace at the recent (ish?) reunion gig in Shepherds Bush.

We bumped into Clint and co. in the pub before hand and he was great.

Still have a photo somewhere....

When exactly was it?

I have no real perception of time and personal history any more....

Feels like it was maybe 3-4 years ago???

LOFL!

:D

Forgot all about this!

apart from milesy that is... apparently he cut someones head with his teeth.

at his age he's lucky not to have lost his teeth.

Lol - it may well have been my mate!

He took a sharp blow to the forehead about 3 tracks from when they went off for the first encore - pissed blood all over his face and looked pretty bad!

He was drunk enough to smile through it though apparently it has come up like a big bloody egg this morning!

Great gig and we were fortunate to bump into the PWEI lads in O'Neils about 20 minutes before they started!

Had a brief chat and got our piccie taken with Clint, who was a very mellow and personable guy....

Reckoned they had some new stuff floating around but hadn't practised any of it enough to play it live....

ERK!! yes that may well have been me.....i was mid-leap and there was a guy in front of me with his back to the stage, as i was in the air i got shoved from behind and went teeth first into the guy's forehead....say sorry to your mate for me (if it was him anyway) - i tried to apologise last night but he went out of the mosh pit quite quickly, (althoguh he was smiling....) :o :(

yeah sounds about right!

We ushered him off fairly quickly to stem the torrent and then retreated further back and took it slightly easier after that......was a nice gash and flap of skin hanging off but he will survive without any major reconstructive surgery and certainly bears the dealer of the blow no ill will!

THese things happen in the mosh eh.....

By the way, how's your teeth miles? Bit loose??? ;)

I have done exactly the same thing myself, but that time I put my teeth through my bottom lip!

heh - given the amount of alcohol you consumed, combined with the crack to the noggin, it may be the only way you will remember the gig.........

You can bloody talk! I haven't seen you so pissed for ages, can't really believe you made it to work today. How is work by the way??

I only sobered up in the last half-hour or so...

bleh. head is a little fuzzy and I am a little bruised and battered, but as long as no-one asks me to do anything I should be ok.....

Etc....

I loved the really early stuff - 'Now For A Feast' was a first rate shambling C86 gem. Thought they lost the way somewhat after 'This Is the Day...' - trying too hard - but really got the shit working again around 'Dos Dedos Mis Amigos'. 'Ich Bin Ein Auslander' - a towering monument to industrial metal that could teach Trent Reznor a few things.

hullo torchsong, i'm off to see girls aloud again on saturday

anyway, i'm sort of the opposite to you with the poppies. i do like the early stuff, and box frenzy, but much prefer it when they do start learning how to use their samplers and equipment..."this is the day"..." is excellent, but the album i most go back to with them is "the cure for sanity" - i think they've honed their skills more by then, it's slicker (but not polished (good!)!!) dancier, moodier... but still the poppies. "the looks or the lifestyle" is well loved by me, too.

Was that the one with 'Get The Girl Kill The Baddies' on it? That was pretty cool...I'd dig out my PWEI collection but everything I've got bar 'Now For A Feast' is on tape, and all the tapes are in a chest of drawers that's currently blocked by a load of junk... :hmm: :o

Btw dodge, I really like Girls Aloud these days - 'Call The Shots' and 'Can't Speak French' are ace...almost as good as Hard-Fi!

:p ;) :D
