Putin and Medvedev

I informed of my understanding and experience of the situation and asked a question (I thought politics also included a learning process and wasn't merely a statement of entrenched opinions guess I may have been mistaken), my opinion of Putin is largely negative BUT I see no external (or for that matter internal) solution to the problem. My question and it was a serious question was what should be done and seeing as you are so very much more politically aware than I am, I was hoping for an answer.

I don't think I have advocated external interference. Why are you putting words in my mouth?

My basis for the dislike of Putin is:

(1) ex-KGB.
(2) Gradual erosion of the separation of powers, direct appointment of regional governors, bringing back things like the old "early voting" system allowing easy fiddling of votes, massive re-arming at a time when poverty is increasing in his country, political prosecutions and no doubt more than tangential involvement in assassinations (KGB stylee)
(3) He doesn't smoke or drink. Very dodgy.

OP comes on her waving the flag for Putin, citing approval ratings as the be-all and end-all. Well fuck assessing his worth simply on approval ratings. And economic up-turns? Bugger all to do with him and more to do with the huge increase in oil revenue.

"Putin singularly failed to democratize Russia" is a sign of complete shambles in one's brain. See, that's too little for me. I'm much more ambitious, when it comes to Human kind... :D

But seriously: he never was a democrat. He was not elected in a proper democratic process. He couldn't care less about democracy, indeed he is showing utter disapproval of the idea.

Need I go on?

That is not a good start for a proper change to adult politics and growth of proper [politically speaking] subjects in Russia.

That man, his "reforms" and his aparatchiks are doing their utmost to create conditions in which they can continue to objectify Russians. :( A total strategic failure, in terms of potential for Russian development - not only economically but also socially and politically! One step forward, seven steps backwards, to amplify Lenin's point about the Russian tango... :D

NJET PASSARAN!!!!! :D

Never said you did but you are obviously unhappy with Putin and would prefer "something/body better I just wondered what or who that would be and how you would like to see this happen, and obviously if this was a realistic wish or just a pipedream.

I agree with that to a point, it does seem (although this could be propoganda and part of the Putin myth) that his service in Germany did serve to open his eyes and mellow him somewhat.

My bold, sounds a bit like the UK :) true it aint perfect there and there are some very dodgy things that go on in the shadow of Putin, BUT the people are behind him so who are we to lecture them on what they should or should not be doing? I would see this very differently if he was clinging on to power in the face of popular dissent.
(3) He doesn't smoke or drink. Very dodgy.

OK you've convinced me there ;)

I didn't read unquestioning support into the OP's posts and unfortunately approval ratings do play a big role in politics (look at the US system), plus I would say the vast majority of "popular" politicians are merely the profiteers of favourable conditions that's the way of the world.

Fair enough. Points well made. I don't have an answer, but I strongly feel that Putin will, in the end, weaken Russia socially and politically. The cult of personality that has built up around him seems very familiar...
