it's going to be a domestic pet, not a draught animal, so i can't see your reasoning

It seems only logical that you make your pet a practical one. What with fuel prices rising the way they are, you'll be quids in.

Don't know yet. I think we'll check out a number of them in the area, as well as considering RSPCA rescued dogs

I'm sure that the RSPCA and other reputable "pounds" get puppys in all the time.

I'm sure if you put your name on a list(s), demonstrate you've done your homework and are responsible, capable, dedicated prospective owners (as you sound - well, read), then they will come up with a pup of, or close to, your breed choice within a matter of months.

G'luck whichever way you go.

I have five (used to be seven,) big, ugly mongrels, each one of which I have picked up off the streets at various ages between one day and a few weeks old. They are now aged seven to ten years and happy and healthy. Each would be dead without my intervention. Very, VERY worth it, my life has been transformed.

Thus resulting in a dog weighing over 100lb's being out of it's owners control. They are BIG dogs!! (but I've cuddled up to few and they can be very soppy)

My eight y/o, Kimbo, tips just over 100 lbs on the scales. A deep, deeeeeeep chested, heavy-set, clumsy, black and tan, German Shepherd-stylee mongrel - with too-small a head, too-short front legs and two silly, floppy ears.

When I picked her up, she was about 12 weeks, skinny as a rake - ribs everywhere, flea ridden, scabby, scared little thing - with big paws. And angry, I mean ANGRY! :D .

Fortunately, over hundreds of hours, I managed to gently inculcate her with the idea that if she's cool with peeps and friendly, things will work out just great for her. She's turned out to be a bit of an old slut actually - do anything for a quick tickle behind the ear and not fussy from whom. :D

Edit: Very well trained too. Even if I do say so meself. :p

100lbs!

Gethin weighs about 17lbs!

I'm not sure if he'll get that much bigger either, he's 8 months, and I think they are supposed to have done most of their growing by 1-ish.
