I'm willing to bet that filtering the water your boat is sitting in would be more efficient.

This would do your drinking water for about £10. A more basic filter would probably do for the rest.

I lied! There is at least one boat out there which is self-sufficient in water (well, successfully borrows it from the canal anyway) - 4 years on and the owner is still alive.
