Protest against the BNP election Victory - Leeds

So in effect you seem to be saying is that it is understandable for people to vote for racist parties if they are experiencing socio-economic hardship?

No. What I am saying is that it is understandable for people to vote for a party like the BNP when they see their wages not keeping pace with the cost of living, poor housing, poor education etc and they see no other political party listening to their concerns except the BNP.

That was my point - people consciously voted for a party they know to be racist on the basis that the interests of the white majority, their intetrests, would be prioritised over that of people from other minority ethnic groups.

I hate to say this, but you are in effect an apologist for the racism of the BNP voter.

That's not what I said though.

Surley he is just trying to understand what drives people to vote for them? Not saying they are right to do so

The thing is we can quite easily get into a situation whereby we're afraid of calling something for what it is ie. BNP voter = racist - and by continuously citing socio-economic problems as the reason for people voting BNP, fails to tackle the issue of the underlying xenophobia that exists in this country and indeed most human societies.

Equating voting BNP with automatically being racist is stupid.

That's NOT the underlying issue.

Are you for real?

Yes we should challenge racism head on, there is no socio-economic excuse for racism. The progressive left needs to start standing up more for all of the poor underclass, and that includes poor young working class white males alongside minority groupings. We need to get the message out that thier interests are not threatened by minorities and in order to do that we need to fight on the side of everyone. I cant help but feel we have neglected these voters that turn to the BNP. Otherwise the facists will fill the gap.
