protein?

1 - They're complete twats and I personally wouldn't even bother working anything out to explain to them. People like that will only zoom in on something else to try n bully you about. Hope you get to move out as soon as poss. Nasty little toads.

Inform yourself for YOU though. :)

2 - You can eat bagels, soymilk, wholewheat bread, oatmeal, tofu(high in protein), broccoli, brown rice, peanut butter, almonds, sesame seeds, baked potato, lentils, tempeh, quinoa, peas, spagetti, spinach, cashews, eggs, cheese....lots more too.......

Yup, I've also been categorised as a stupid liberal who is going to let all the asylum seekers into the country. And apparently I'm "pretentious" because if a film is subtitled that doesn't stop me from watching it?! FFS...it's not as if I'm up my own arse and go around forcing art house films on people?!

And ta :) tbf from what I'm now reading there's nothing wrong with my diet, they're just being cunts. And I find it a bit rich that this has come from people who have ordered 3 takeaways in a row!

Apologies, I think I just needed a rant on urban! *breathes*

Hang on - are you lodging with my parents? :hmm:

that reminds me I've taped masterchef

Yeah, I was in a very down to earth college. Though I guess it's different at post grad level as people are older and there are a lot of international students.

Oxbridge grad communities kick ass.

Far less drunk than undergrads, far more comfortable. Far more willing to discuss anxiety / concerns / adult stuff. IME.

In other news, you could always buy a tub of whey protein!

http://www.bulkwhey.co.uk/products.htm do 6kg tubs :)

Yay.

You should chain them up and force feed them mung beans and lentils and then pour water down their throats and watch them swell up like that kid in Charlie and The Chocolate Factory before exploding and leaving a better world. :)

the annoying, homophobic, racist flatmates i've posted about earlier are now getting at me for not eating meat. apparently i'm going to "snap in two" from a protein or iron deficiency. (cue: nasty laughter - oh and ps, "your friends are freaks." ) Anyway, tonight's dinner, which sparked off their tirade, involved egg noodles and cashew nuts - and i eat dairy. I'd have thought that would be healthy enough? Are they just being irritating or should I be eating more protein? How much are you meant to eat?

On a different note, I can't wait to move out...:(

They sound like ignorant twats. Unfortunately, I think throwing facts and figures at them is not likely to make any difference.

If you eat a balanced veggie diet you have little to worry about. The only main difficiency that arrises from not eating meat (as long as you eat a balanced diet) is B12, and as there's plenty of it in diary products the only time to be concerned is if you are vegan... but even then it's not hard to get as a lot of vegan products are fortified with it, and there's plent of it in marmite.

From Vegsoc:
Being vegetarian does not mean your diet will be lacking in protein. Most plant foods contain protein and in fact it would be very difficult to design a vegetarian diet that is short on protein. Excess dietary protein may lead to health problems. It it now thought that one of the benefits of a vegetarian diet is that it contains adequate but not excessive protein.

Good luck with your new place :)

I'm just surprised you haven't researched this thoroughly before if you're a vegetarian  Seems a bit gung ho with your health, that's all.

This might help: http://www.vegparadise.com/protein.html

ETA: that was a link from this wikipedia article:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vegetarian_nutrition
This coming from a man who did medical trials?! :D

Anyway to fakeplasticgirl, you don't need much protein to keep running - it's mostly used to rebuild your damaged muscle tissues so if you're not breaking them, they don't need replacing IYSWIM. Iron is plentiful in green leafies so keep on the spinach and things will be grand.

Move back to Oxford coz I'm only just down the road and I'll make you a dinner :D

Yep...loads of vegetables! But apparently I'm probably going to die soon of anaemia (cue nasty cackle)

Also - apparently "my friends are ugly and I'm weird" :(

Now i'm sulking in my room...

Tell 'em that if you become anaemic you can easily solve your problem with a cheap iron supplement, whereas their personality defects will require thousands of pounds' worth of expensive therapy.
Then laugh, wave at them, say "so long, losers" and exit the room.

just have a 400ml drink of whey protien (about 30g of protien per drink) like what weightlifters use

and kill the flatmates in the face

At least you'll only have to put up with those housemates for a few more months.

Meanwhile, if they wind you up again about not getting enough iron or protein...
(this will probably make them feel so sick that they won't be able to speak to you for some time).
Props:
1 unused, perfectly clean tampon
tomato juice (can be replaced with any thick red nontoxic liquid - not ribena, it's too pink)
Timing:
Halfway into another housemate rant about your vegetarian diet.
What you do:
Say "You're right, I really should do something about this". Leave the room. Unwrap the tampon, dip it in the tomato juice and reappear, casually sucking the tampon. If annoying housemate says anything, come over all innocent and say something about you're just supplementing your iron the easiest way.:D

I get that a lot from my family who think that just cause I'm vegan I dont get all the vitamins that I need ect tho multi-vitamins help :P

but yeah, so long as you have a couple of portions of beans/pulses/tofu I'd guess you'll be ok

tho how much you need depends on what you want your body to be doing too.. eating more proteins will help you build muscle ect so have a think about what you want your body to do and build your diet around it

plus your flatmates sound ignorant as fuck cause there's calcium and iron in broccoli and other greens so eat enough and you won't get anemia and your bones are not going to snap, tho if you're still eating dairy then that's not really an issue

I'd even go so far as to say your diet is probably a lot healthier and balanced than theirs..I'd suggest you tell them to get to f*ck cause you're a grown ass woman and what you put into your body is your own business

xx

 :D

that is very wrong but very funny!

Get armed with some protein facts, so you can tell your flatmates all the veggie food which is high in protein (and much healthier than most meat)

mr steev: doesn't look like i'm going to be moving out until june :(

Your flatmates sounds horrible, is there no way you can move out sooner?

I was just about to post a "where the hell did you find these horrible, mean, ignorant wankers" type post.... when I spotted your update.

hoorah! glad you got a nice new pad :)

p.s. we should say hi when you get back to Oxford....

Still, no one has yet said "people from africa deserve to get aids because they're too stupid to wear condoms" to me yet... so I have high hopes...
A few months down the line, things are going real well, you'll turn round and say "I really love living with you guys! It just feels so right!" Which is the point at which one of them turns round and says "Yes, that's because it's god's plan!!!"
