Proper football grounds that survive (terrace porn)

I've been to Wigan when there's been 1500 (possibly less) in the ground.

Cardiff always had one of the biggest differentials between gates - 3000 or so in the dark days but even when top of the fourth division they'd be pushing 15000 I think.

I've been to Wigan when there's been a 3 figure gate!

I fucking hate Portsmouth's ground. I'd be happy to see the back of pompey for this sole reason if they got relegated. And the fact Harry Redknapp is the boss.

   Thanks.

A 'proper' footie ground must have lots of Portacabins - used or unused. The more the better.

when we first moved to Bristol the West Stand was still being built and the players had to get changed in two glorified portacabins in the corner, one stacked on top of the other. It was well weird but all part of being a Rovers fan :D

The Eastbank at Aldershot is shared by home & away supporters. Its vaulted roof allows for great acoustics.

So is our Blackfriars end, is that segregated though like ours is?

Yeah, there's a big fence that goes all the way up to the roof (or a fence and maybe netting for the bit up to roof, can't remember)

Means you don't wanna get too close to the partition or you start losing the corners of the pitch behind the partition.

We've got a cage, dunno if it blocks the view though, my mate has been in it and hasn't complained.

I heartily approve of Cappielow. Phwoar

All the good grounds have gone though :( Boothferry Park was classic if you ignored the supermarket. Pretend that they never installed seats along the side and Griffin Park is as good as it gets these days

When QPR take over the ground (feels nice to say), it is still a bit 80s looking on a grim day. Heightened by the big Atari sign on one of the grandstands.

It is the last decent atmosphere in the Prem though.

Hilton Park - Leigh RMI

Technically a Rugby League venue, Hilton Park boasts some lovely old fashioned crumbling terraces and rickety stands.

It's due to be replaced soon but refreshingly, the new ground will boast some terracing at one end which is nice, despite the identikit look of the new 'Leigh Sports Village' (Also, pleasingly, Leigh Centurions RLFC have reverted to the more tradional name of Leigh RLFC- Let's hear it for Leigh!).

note terracing at that end --------->

I want to throttle the fan that ring's that fucking cow bell for 90 minutes.

Changed his name, has untold amount of Portsmouth tats and lives and breathes Pompey FC.

I was amazed when I learned he wasn't married.:D

Cathkin Park, Former home of Third Lanark.

Cathkin Park's terraces survive as does the pitch as part of one of Glasgow's parks.

Which brings me to a whole new thread idea... Derelict football grounds!

I've already posted pics of Boothferry Park on this thread :)

Cathkin Park was the Second version of Hampden Park, Queens Park moved out when they built the present ground and Third Lanark moved in. My mate's granddad used to play for Third Lanark and scored against both Rangers and Celtic for them :)

Bits of the terracing at Arsenal's old ground in Woolwich are still visible in some back gardens round there.

I remember some amazing pics of the Old Bradford PA ground in an old football encyclopedia I had. Untill fairly recently that huge terrace at the valley was still visible behind the (i think) east stand.

We are playing Brentford next saturday (21st July) in a pre-season friendly for the Supporters Trust Cup of any one fancies it..

Also planning to do the Grifin Park pub crawl. There is a pub at each corner of the round at Griffin Park.

It's hardly a 'proper old football ground' but here's a picture of my little spot in paradise on a saturday afternoon for the past ten years or so :)

I stand just out of shot, to the right of that gangway, just in front of the third set of barriers up. Perfect spot to abuse opposition corner takers, linesmen and substitutes warming up :D

Griffin Park is one of my faves for that very reason.

We often go to the Brewery Tap on Catherine Wheel Road first.

Careful with that mate, in this day & age you'll be banned.

We managed to get one linesman laughing along with us last season :D

Me mate Dave does a nice line in surreal abuse of the nearest target as well which gets some interesting responses :D

Penydarren Park - Merthyr Tydfyl

Wales is full of lovely little stadiums for the Welsh Leagues.

And lest we forget - Penydarren Park, which is surely one of the better non league grounds at it's level, much upgraded to host European games in the 80s. Apparantly it still holds 10,000, which is a lot considering the requirements these days. It has covered standing for 5000 as well, which must be as much as most places these days. Record crowd of 23,000 as well.

It's brilliant coming across Cathkin Park on a wander. Pretty sure they had a Third Lanark memorial game recently against Queens Park

Where, at Cathkin? If so  From the pics it looks like the pitch is effectively still there.
