i tend to think of the krautrock (the term is faust's iirc?) as being quite distinct from prog, or at least i prefer to think of it that way ;)

english journo`s actually, probably the nme. the germans tended to refer to the whole thing as kosmiche musik

i thought Faust did actually call a song Krautrock, or something like that.. although maybe that was a response to an already-coined term

Shouldnt the Clash be in the poll. Sandinista is one of the greatest prog records ever reocrded. Right up there with YES.

*starts preparing the noose*

...no, hang on - i think you've got a point :o

aye, its more than simply being a tad overblown and pretentious.

they are necesary but not sufficient prerequisites.

I notice Pallas have dipped below 50%. I can only assume that that is because no one has heard of them. So:

PALLAS:Like Marillion but more so AND worse

I haven't heard Pallas, and Marillion are just wannabe prog.

So I voted for the obvious ones - Carvan, Tull, VDGG.

None of whom I own a single moment of progging by.

Phew.

No he doesn't - are you both fucking deaf? Or do you not know what prog means?

What? So you are trying to tell me that a double (triple in the original vinyl release) concept album, done in the white reggae/dub style, among others, is not prog?

Are you sure YOU know what prog is?

not really to do with the poll but here's a page of (mostly) prog mp3s, just a few tracks by the bands but some pretty obscure stuff there...

I saw Van Der Graff Generator recently and they were absolutely out of this world , one of the best live gigs I have ever been to , they just played so well together , absolute mastery ...

Kraftwerk , hmmmmm , would argue whether they are prog , I would think they are somewhat set apart from everything else , having had more influence on dance music ...

Caravan ..... excellent .

only recently got into VDGG on the advice of a prog obsessed mate of mine...crackin' stuff though

(been listening to Gentle Giant today....)

Yes. I am. Because it's not.

I had a ticket for the Leicester gig, but couldn't go in the end :( Sounded good tho.

Sandinista - about as prog as Puccini

The highest scorers will join Yes, Genesis, ELP, Camel, Soft Machine, & The Enid for the mighty poll of polls.
Well I must have missed the other poll but how have Soft Machine ended up in this list - I wouldn't call them prog at all. The hallmark of prog was the attempt to incorporate elements from classical music to try to push the boundaries of rock, often with hilarious consequences. Soft Machine were influenced by jazz and fusion more than classical - just because they came from Canterbury doesn't make them prog.
