Problem with Nikon 18-200mm lens bought in the US - UK warranty?

Guess what? The lens has just fucked again - at the start of my holiday. And it's the only lens I brought so my D300 has been rendered useless.

I'm seriously unimpressed with Nikon - the lens is a very expensive piece of kit, it hasn't been used that much yet it's fucked up twice in 11 months.

Oh dear. Can you hire a lens for your holiday? Edit: or did you take a compact camera as well...

Luckily, I've also brought along my Lumix, but Nikon are leaving a very bitter taste in my mouth right now. One option would be to buy another lens that I would want in my collection anyway - say a wideangle zoom - but it's all an expense I can ill afford (seeing as all my recent NY trips have been funded by me selling the photos over the following year, I do need to take good quality images).
