Well that's nice. And now that you've got it out of your system, can we get back to the topic?

sorry, i have no useful comments to make about privatising public space in a general sense, althouh from a journalistic prspective, it can makre reporting difficult, especially in places like shopping malls, rail stations, canary wharftype areas etc. not so bad when you're doing proactive journaslism andmaybe have more time to seek out and obtain the relevant permissions to go aling and film/record, interview/vox pops, or tak photos, but if you're doimg more reactive journalism, responding to and reporting an incident, then this privatisation of public space will hinder journalists' ability to report and hampre freedom of speech.

with respect to privatisation more generally, i'm surprised they've gotten away with the carbon emissions trading lark, which to me amounts to privatising the air ew breathe... energy, then water, now air... that's the environment... in respect of the person, well they're even privatising(patenting) dna, so even our own personal genetic makeup is being privatised... has that been done yet?

Frightening?
Why?

Why are you even surprised that there are tens of thousands of DNA-based patents and patent applications, bearing in mind that understanding genetic science and using it in the development of new treatments is todays pharmaceutical hot topic?

Why am I surprised? Not at the fact that DNA is being patented, because yet it has been for ages, but just how extensively it has been.

Do you not see any ethical considerations in that?

understanding genetic science and using it in the development of new treatments is todays pharmaceutical hot topic?

As far as I'm aware it's making money that is and has always been the hot topic of pharmaceuticals, generally at the expense of everybody else.

Patenting DNA is in no way necessary to developing new treatments, but it does mean that pharmaceutical companies can withold information and treatments in the future.

i don't care if u are a student anarcho journalist, or a cunt... hope the link was useful.

i find myself beyond 'discussing' this kind of thing. it's happening and it's shit and perhaps we should get on and do something about it. contesting planning applications is one way forward, and a useful means of community mobilisation...

a bit boring on the face of it, but can open up possibilities...
