Something needs to be done about the FE sector though. It's desperate for proper funding and proper recognition. We could also do with sweeping away some of the corporationist elements too.

completely agree. plus get rid of the use of the agency - approaching a majority of teaching staff in many FE colleges. unbelieveable.

the new priorities for funding are completely destructive of what FE is supposed to be about (re-takes, 2nd chances, return to education, lifelong learning, vocational education). Our college has to go from almost nil full cost recovery courses (ie courses where students pay) to something like 40% within four years.

first - we'll never achieve that.
secondly - if we did through some miracle, it would be completely the wrong thing to do as it would squeeze out exactly those people who need help.

don't get me going on bringing 14-16 year olds into FE. that is probably illegal and criminally irresponsible to my mind.

Aye, you've identified another massive problem within FE: the widespread use of agency staff; the college doesn't have to pay sick of holiday pay, but what colleges don't realise (like local authorities who do the same thing) is that you often end up paying more for agency staff than if you took them on full time on a permanent contract.

Protocol Professional must be the worst agency; you have to wait 2 months before you get paid and during that time you end up going into arrears and defaulting on credit arrangements.

i was on our governing body as staff rep when they made the decision to use the agency. I can't remember the figures now - but the full on-costs for agency are more expensive than directly employed - and the proportion payed direct to the agency is obscene. but the college doesn't develop any long term responsibilities, and doesn't have to reemploy the following ac year.

the latest thing is a colleague can't be sponsored for the Home Office as he's employed through the agency (the legal fiction is he's self-employed). So he's going to Canada (unwillingly). So we lose yet another good member of staff.
