Prince - Bit of a cock really

If Prince wants to be taken seriously, he should dress up as a wizard and do a triple album of tuneless acid spazzed noodling.
now you're talking :D

preferrably about atlantean sorcery.

but you can't have everything.

I think it's way too late for anyone to take him seriously, after that bizarre interview where he wore a bag on his face.

I've got sympathy for the wee guy, so many years in the spotlight and your bound to start questioning your image/identity, who owns it and does a photo steel your soul etc.;)

For Prince as an artist, image is (almost) everything, and for him to want to protect it is entirely understandable.

Think about Elvis (and Parker) censoring every shot ever taken of him, and it pretty much paid off for them didn't it...

but to say he's talentless?

that's one of the single most fuckwitted things I've ever read.
Me an Dub agreeing! who'da thunk it?!

Prince is an absolute legend, a genius of the highest order, and this gives him the right to act like a bit of a tit at times...

He is also, apparently, a legend in the sack... and may well have taken Martika's virginity, which is pretty good going...

He is an absolute innovator who pisses all over clowns like Jacko from a very great height!

thanks B 2 God :D

to give it some context, there was an interview with him during the symbol days in Guitar World magazine. The article made a point of saying that they had to refer to him solely by way of the symbol and said this was a condition of the interview.

Egomania.

he isn't innovative nor is he a genius. Using that word to describe his ability devalues the word completely.

A talented cunt, though.
there's nothing talented about it. anyone can learn to play instruments and none of what he plays is original or technically that challenging. if you want to hear talent, listen to Zappa's work - on and off the guitar (his ability to play totally outshines prince). Prince is a very average musician who happens to play a lot of instruments; that's not talent. Hendrix's guitar playing - that was talent. Want to hear funk bass innovation? Listen to Bootsy. Want to hear a grown man scream like a child being molested? Listen to little richard. Want to hear innovative funk music, listen to the stuff Laswell has done with the likes of the aforementioned Bootsy (as well as his heavy dub influence). Or even Talking Heads mixing up the funk synth stuff (as well as using some of the old pfunk musicians on stage). Thats funky and innovative.

Prince, to me, isn't.

all prince has done is calculate a mass of influences and market himself (in that i might agree he is talented, but not as a musician).

Nah, wishface runs tings, tings nah run him, innit  if he says prince is a talentless egomaniac, it's a nailed on fact.....
wanna see how much of an egomaniac he can be? Look at the liner photos on the 312 (or 321 or whatever it's called) album. It's like through the keyhole for the ludicrous.

we shall have to agree to differ methinks ;)

He's done some cack, and yes, he stole a lot of stuff, but what about say, 'kiss' or 'sometimes it snows in April'- these are just great songs... 'Gett off' is pretty hot as well... and 'Peach'...

ah well, you don' like him, u don' like him...

*changes name to incomprehensible squiggle*

Anyone who thinks Prince is nuts should consider Michael fucking Jackson. Jackson's crazy in a bad (not Bad) way, Prince is crazy in a cool Fonz/Elvis/Bruce Lee way.

I don't like all of Prince's stuff, especially the ones where he tries to have sex with me, but the man's a Music God.

Who's got that smilie with the rockin 'V' sign? :)

I went skiing with school when I was 13. At the disco Mr Gibson (or Larry as we knew him) danced to 1999. It has left me deeply scarred.

I could never listen to Prince before then, nevermind after.

Prince for me is very tall, he's a white fella with an afro and a tash. Like a 7ft Graham Souness.

Likewise!

I just don't get those on here who say he isn't. He did 5 albums which were absolutely brilliant during the eighties, and i can only assume that these people are deaf and simply trolling for a laugh. :p

No arguement here. In fact, I imagine they could have made some extremely interesting records together (if it's possible to contain 2 control freaks long enough to finish a record)

Want to hear funk bass innovation? Listen to Bootsy.

Or Larry Graham, who calls Prince "Little Brother" - but what would he know compared to you, huh?

Want to hear a grown man scream like a child being molested? Listen to little richard.
He likes Prince, too - but what would he know compared to you, huh?

According to Bootsy "we was doing P.Funk so much and we didn't have no competition but ourselves" - when he heard that George Clinton was working with Prince - "It is gonna to make us hungry again for each other."

Still, wtf does Bootsy know, huh?

I'm well aware that these people all like Prince. It's not exactly a secret.

But they are just people who play music, their opinion about his music is no more or less valid than anyone else's. They aren't deities, and neither is Prince.

I mention Bootsy Collins, for instance, as someone who is innovative and does stretch out. Prince...doesn't. The fact he likes Prince really is irrelevant.

And in many cases these people aren't going to bite the hand that feeds.

Prince btw simply wouldn't have the chops to play what Zappa can write.

Just people who play music? Well, the guy who plays pan-pipes outside WH Smiths every other Saturday just plays music too. But not too many people are interested in his opinion on music . No, these people are pre-eminent in their musical fields - some people call them legends - and they clearly respect Prince's abilities (enough to work with him).

Yes, he's done his fair share of mediocre stuff (like most artists), he may well be past his best, and he frequently acts like a cock.

I think they could have knocked out quite a respectable jazz-funk album. Perhaps a concept album based on the evils of Warner Bros Records. In fact the more you think about their careers and working methods, the more similarities spring to mind.

keep this up and your comedy career will go through the roof -you'll be on Mock The Week before you know it

1) 'chops' are for butchers and your use of the word shows you up as a tit.
2) Zappa was talented but had no sense of self-editing and released an ASTONISHING amount of utter toss
3) Zappa can't actually write anything, can he?

dumbass

why are you assuming that because someone is a busker that they know fuck all about music or talent? Bit arrogant dont you think?

And I don't repsect prince's opinions on music (mostly because they are a load of jehovah's witness inspired bollocks - so that just goes to show!)

As for Frank Zappa feat. Prince: urg. Zappa doesn't need some second rate funketeer to sound good. Get back to me when Prince records Black Page or a piece of work like Watermelon in Easter Hay or Sofa (and those are the easy tracks!) :D

zappa can't write anything

You do talk an astonishing amount of ass.

There's plenty of musicisans who could outplay Prince on any number of instruments. Zappa is just one in a very long line of musicians who are far more innovative and skilled than that sad old has been god botherer.

you are aware that Zappa has been dead quite a long time? How do you suggest he writes then?

unless you include de-COMPOSING.

you can use that in your act :)

:D

Busking is to music what James Blunt... is.

and if Bob Dylan was a busker, he'd make nish...

Rich Hall joke- Bob Dylan got the harmonica and the guitar; if he'd only bothered to strap a couple of cymbals to his knees...

and appropriately enough, here is a clip of Prince busking...

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=CRDCn5f4hSE

yes :p

No, obviously not- I met a guy in Antwerp who won European busker of the year, he was fantastic. Banjo player. I got bought a drink just cos I was sat with him, cos he started playin and it just sounded incredible. This woman bought everyone on our table a drink.

I was busking yesterday, and we were pretty shit :D
