Prince - Bit of a cock really

wishface said:
his entire act has been done by other people years before.

Just who did a single like "Sign O'the Times" before?

What's formulaic about that track? The subject of AIDS hardly had "hit single" written all over it.

And Nina Simone didn't cover any old crap..

Although every crap beatles cover pales into insigificance when compared to the Streets doing "Your Song"......(shudder)

I don't care for that song at all, frankly. Doesn't particularly excite me; hardly the first song to cover social injustice and societal problems is it though. His act is not original, his obsession with fashion and sex are really tiresome and boring and i don't care for his music. if i wanted to listen to decent funk music i'd go back to the source, not some pop star offering a watered down version thereof. That's how i feel about his music. It doesn't inspire me at all.

No, but sales + critical acclaim + longevity + fanatical fans ted to be fairly good indications. Let's put it this way, are legendary funk figures like Clinton, Maceo Parker and Larry Graham having a bit of a laugh at Prince's expense when they praise him.

no, they are getting free studio time. :D

i'm well aware that people like him. i however am well aware that others don't and i am also well aware that i'm one of them.

i don't see any reason to like him either, having listened to him over the years.
in all fairness he has a couple of songs that aren't overly offensive, but then there are songs like 'when doves cry'...

urg. that song alone is enough to destroy the credibility of any musician.

I'm a bit non plussed by Prince but I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man is one of my favourite tunes like ever. And he's genuinely bonkers which is good.

One of his best songs IMO.

A rather pointlessly elitist sentiment, I think. There's no such thing as a true musical source. Everything is dervied from something else. For example, "Rock'n'Roll" happened almost by accident when Country and Western guys tried to play R'n'B. I'm sure they also had their detractors then who questioned their "authenticity".

Love to be a fly on the wall when you explain to Prince's sax player how un-funky his music is...

"thanks.. thanks.. I'm here all week. You should try the chicken.. "

Thing is, I'm a huge funk fan and i'll admit to not being a huge admirer of Prince during the 80s - a bit too synth based, a bit too 80s, a bit too commercial for me. Child of his era really.

But I can't fault the man's musical abilities, his singing, his downright showmanship. And time's been kind to his back catalogue - he throws a fuck of a show.

Look at the people who work with him regularly - The Family Stone's legendary bass player Larry Graham, Clinton, Maceo Parer and a whole host of other funk stand-outs. Do they think him derivative or a true son of the funk?

I can't quite stress just how nonsensical Wishface's blabber really is.

this is the thing: i don't give a fuck if he doesn't LIKE Prince, that's not an issue.
but to say he's talentless?

that's one of the single most fuckwitted things I've ever read.

I know. Even in my most 'hardcore old funk snob' phase I remember hearing a bootleg version of Prince playing "Just My Imagination' that just blew me away - one of the most emotive guitar solos I've ever heard.

Multi instrumentalist, heavyweight songwriter, fantastic dancer, great vocalist for sure. Talentless? Never....

i'm not remotely snobby, i just don't think prince is very good. so what if he can play loads of instruments. he's far from the only musician who can play multiple instruments. i don't care if he can dance either, means nothing to me. i've no interest in musicians who can dance (so long as they don't dance like billy ray cyrus). and so what if those guys work with him and like him. why should that matter.

give me bootsy collins any day; far more inventive. his work on the praxis album with bernie worrell from the old p-funk days is a bazillion times more imaginative than another of prince's tedious pop tunes.

so you accept that he can play lots of instruments. But you think he's talentless? :D :D

"take my wife.. I wish you would!" badoom-tish

well obviously he can play lots of instruments. where did i say otherwise.

Doesn't automatically make his music any good.

If Prince wants to be taken seriously, he should dress up as a wizard and do a triple album of tuneless acid spazzed noodling.

Well, he's certainly pissed off about something!

And no, Prince - digital music ain't going to disappear matey - but your fans may if you continue these daft crusades against them.

(By the way, could the next album be like this track, please)

He's obviously talented and is cool (do you remember his amazing set for the Brits??). Maybe he sometimes gets his knickers in a twist about stupid stuff such as that symbol stuff, and maybe this, but it soon blows over and we are left with at least 5 classic albums out of 13 during the 80's, when Michael Jackson could only produce 3 in total!

Also he can dance better, and play more instruments.
