Prince - Bit of a cock really

wishface said:
it's just formulaic music. that's it. how anyone can take him seriously i do not know. a collection of influences, nothing more.

You should get a stand up show.

i don't get what people think is so great about prince, he seems like a twat and his music isn't exactly brilliant..can someone explain the appeal?

Daddy, daddy, make it stop:(

oh come on, name a genre of music that isn't influenced by another?

prince as a musician is a genius.
his career may have peaked years ago but compared to his counterparts (jacko, springsteen) he has aged gracefully.

and thank fuck for that.
the key part you're missing is 'nothing more'.

That's all he is. Superficial and uninspiring.

Compared to his counterparts?

Songs like Sign O'the Times, When Doves Cry, 1999, Housequake etc. Great voice, talented musician, great dancer. Stuff like that.

Out of interest, what music do you like wishface?
i like many styles and many musicians, lsting them all would be long winded and pointless. I don't like Prince; i find he hides behond an image. I find him to be precocious and tedious and I find his music to be rather dull. Slave, indeed. A very well off 'slave'.

Ahhh, yes, but can he hold a stadium of 60 thousand people enraptured for two hours and send them all home feeling like they've seen a funky Jesus on acid? Mmmm?

I dunno - Springsteen's latest is a bit of a cracker (and I'm by no means a Springsteen anorak). He could have been a total stadium cock-rocker coasting on his greatest hits by now (See Rod,Elton etc) , but he has tried different stuff over the years. (I think his sudden taste of cock-rock in the mid-eighties put him off for good)

Jacko however......well, I'd never rule him out entirely, but he seems so totally divorced from reality that it's fairly safe to say he's lost it.

Mystified by Prince's motives here - just when he needs to be building relationships with his fans, he's doing the exact opposite. One of the dangers of being a control freak, I suppose - nobody close to you who can say "FFS, don't be a twat"
Springsteen was never cock rock. That's hair metal music; bands like motley crue. He has a lot more validity than that. And he can perform. I'd much rather listen to him than squiggle-man and his attempts to try and elevate his music into something of earth shattering import.

He certainly can.

Fair point - maybe "stadium rock" would have been a more accurate description.

You're only thinking of Born in the USA and the 80s stuff...The Boss was always a cut above the 80s AOR/Dire Straits milieu he is often thoughtlessly associated with...

He's a twat.

A talented twat maybe, but still a twat. :)

No way. he's sound. Good mate of mine. always up for a laugh.

You don't want to believe all that guff they print in the papers, mate.

Each to their own. The gig was great IMO, very "American" and polished with several cheesy moments, which is not normally my thing, but it was great. He's a consumate musician, great singer and dancer and an amazing showman.

Prince was a fucking god back in the day - pissed on pretty much anyone else from a great height on record and live (saw SotT and Lovesexy tours)...altho he's been a cock for years, with the occassional brilliant track (Gett Off and Sexy muthafucka are optimum pulling&shagging tunes)...this just compounds what happens when you make a deal with the devil that is DMGT...

Oh, and apparently he's got a very big cock as well...

I guess, though i that does him a disservice given that stadium rock is a bit of a perjorative. Though he plays rock music and in stadiums. I've never really had a problem with that myself, i like a lot of bands that have played in stadiums.

It's not the size of the cock, it's whether you can make a funny looking squiggle out of it.

Formulaic music? WTF?

Prince has his faults but you really are talking out your arse on this one.

kyser_soze said:
Yeah. He gave away his last CD on the cover of the MoS, or did that one escape you?

Ah:D Fuck, too early in the morning, I read that as Royal Mail for some reason.

This thread reminds me of an idea for a post, Artists who've kept their integrity, has it been done before (probably).

I don't find his music to be of any value at all. It's all been done bfore and better. I find it formulaic in the extreme: he isnt doing anything new or interesting to me. Crappy and svacuous lyrics with tired musical cliches. Just because he plays all the intruments himself (for the most part) doesn't make the music any mre appealing for me. The fact that he hides behind a silly image and a strange ego just makes him all the more unappealing.

Bad news for the 86,275,000 album sales then :(
