That tells me more than I magaged to glean from watching it twice. First time was in the cinema and I quite enjoyed it but only after I stopped trying to follow the plot and just sort of let the film wash over me

Agreed, the characters are objectionable.

Saw it the second time as I wanted to know whether any plot would become apparent, but it didn't, really.
