Primavera Sound 2008

boycotting primavera until they manage to get permission to open beyond 6am.
Erol alkan last year was the biggest disappointment of the summer of festivals.

He was shit, but then, he is actually quite shit most of the time these days and occasionally plays a good party set.

But lollollol at opening beyond 6am.
How many UK festivals open anywhere near that late?
Anyways, by the time the sun comes up it's beach o'clock and it feels good to get away from the overpriced crappy drinks.

Dunno about beer, but we've taken vodka in before, no problem. Just stick it in a water bottle or something. On the whole they're pretty relaxed about bag searching, although sometimes they will make more of an effort.

It's not uk festivals its comparing to though, is it? It's stuff like sonar and benicassim, which do continue later than 6 for those who like their music more electronic.

tip, get the tram. it's better than the metro. and be prepared to wait around if you leave with the herds at 6am. have some churros and a cheap beer at the churreria nr glories (if it still exists and hasn't been knocked down as part of the modernisation of the area).

beer is more challenging to get in than spirits. I suspect they're going to be even tougher this year as it has been getting progressively more difficult over the last three years.

almost complete line up announced today. anyone else going?

Animal Collective
Bill Callahan
Caribou
Dinosaur Jr.
Fanfarlo
Holly Golightly & The Brokeoffs
Les Savy Fav
The Marzipan Man
Mission Of Burma
Mixmaster Mike
The Notwist
Okkervil River
Portishead
Rufus Wainwright
Sebadoh
The Swell Season
Tindersticks
Vampire Weekend
Voxtrot

These all look good. I am going to be running around missing things again

im assuming you cant take beer in? how much spending money shud i take? erm i dunno....
Getting drinks in isn't so easy, I've found. Although tbf when I've tried I've already been a bit drunk so maybe not the best times...
You can usually shove a bottle of something down yr trousers.
Bag searches a re pretty chilled, but they usually make you throw the cap off your water away, so be sure to pack a spare in your pocket. Don't want to tempt fate, but in the past there've been no real body searches.

There's usually a man somewhere wanting to sell you "stuff" in the festival, but it can be a mission to find. Loads of people usually ask me, because apparently I look like a Spanish dealer :D...

Money- drinks inside are a bit of a rip- you have to buy tokens for drinks (and some food stalls, but it all gets confused cos some take actual cash instead), and a beer will likely cost 4€-5€ this year.
Spirits represent better value but spirit+mixer is in the region of 7€ (although you do get Spanish "measures").
There's a bar very close-by, but they do close and it's usually teeming, so not the best alternative.

Excluding any special ingredients you're looking at a generous evening costing 40-50€ incl plenty of snacks.

Big Tip- when going to collect your tickets- go in the morning of the Thursday. It's worth making the extra journey out to the site to avoid the MASSIVE hour+ queuing in the evening once it opens properly.

I could go on and on.

But it's primarily a rrrrrock festival. With the electronic stuff bolted on, and 6am is pretty hardcore for the asymmetrically-haired indie-kids ;)

Definitely do this ^^^ It will make your life so much easier, plus you'll get to laugh at all the saps queuing up and down the block for their tickets while you breeze in through the gate.

other tips

when going out of the main gate to see someone relatively famous at the concert hall next door (i saw robyn hitchcock and billy bragg there last year) queue early. i mean an hour before they start. or you will get stick near the back.

the walk to and from the atp stage if you just want to have a look at a band is a good 20 minute plus trip once it gets busy.

the sound is shit in the main bowl stage unless you are near the front.

you can exchange your beer tickets from one day to the next, but its a hassle and takes longer than buying them on the day, also you cant swap thursday ones for a sturday or fridays for sunday.

wilco singing "i am trying to break your heart" at 2am in the morning are fucking awesome.

for billy bragg last year you should've been in to see the act before him! david thomas broughton! best thing i saw all year.

dont tell me that! i already missed enough good acts without there being one i didnt even know was good that i missed out on.

how can any festival that makes you on purpose miss seeing modest mouse call itself humane?!

yes. it cant be much worse. though at least i didnt think i saw you. i recognised may kasahara and didnt say hello. damn indieness.

Really? You should have made yourself known, I was with three gorgeous single friends ;) Mind you, I was ridiculously drunk all three nights, so you probably wouldn't have got much sense out of me. Plus I also thought Modest Mouse were shit, so maybe it's for the best :D

Accidentally slept through the whole set :o

Right, tickets bought and flights booked. We're going out on Tuesday 27th and coming back Monday 2nd. :D

Has anyone got any links to cheap apartments or hotels? We've stayed in Barcelona lots of times before but want to try somewhere different and as it's a festival cheap and cheerful would suit best.

eta No longer need apartment or hotel details as we've managed to get into an hotel we've always wanted to stay at - sorted !

you were watching ginferno in front of me. i should have said hello. will your three friends be there this year?

i didnt get to see modest mouse. i like them. perhaps they had an off night.

i fell asleep a little earlier in the evening of wilco as welll, too much excitement, not enough stimulation, luckily the thrall of seeing Jeff woke me up.

Urban Barcelona meet-up must happen this year.
The Wednesday night before Prima might be good. We can all sit around awkwardly sipping beers and hiding behind plates of tapas. It'll be FUN! Nah, seriously we should try it out, could be fun, Barca's a brilliant city for messing around in.
