Presidential Election & Uprising in Iran June 2009

I'm on my phone, so can't cut and paste. But It's the top story on the diary column on the right of the page.

According to that dailykos diary thingy the iranian electoral commision which was jointly setup by the four candidates is calling the election fraudulant. The iranian artist has an update that the only 3 words that i can understand are "Mousavi" and "Please forward" :(

They must feel like we did in 92 when everyone was sure the Tories must lose, but they didn't. But we're about to vote those cunts back in.

Fisk's report said:
An interval here for lunch with a true and faithful friend of the Islamic Republic, a man I have known for many years who has risked his life and been imprisoned for Iran and who has never lied to me. We dined in an all-Iranian-food restaurant, along with his wife. He has often criticised the regime. A man unafraid. But I must repeat what he said. "The election figures are correct, Robert. Whatever you saw in Tehran, in the cities and in thousands of towns outside, they voted overwhelmingly for Ahmadinejad. Tabriz voted 80 per cent for Ahmadinejad. It was he who opened university courses there for the Azeri people to learn and win degrees in Azeri. In Mashad, the second city of Iran, there was a huge majority for Ahmadinejad after the imam of the great mosque attacked Rafsanjani of the Expediency Council who had started to ally himself with Mousavi. They knew what that meant: they had to vote for Ahmadinejad."
Interesting. Question is, can we trust Fisk?

Classic situation isn't it - 'reformer' from within the system utilises public anger to lever himself into power, shits on that public after. It would be a terrible mistake for this to turn into/stay within the bounds of a pro-Mousavi movement rather than an anti-system movement.

But isn't that they way that true progressive change often happens - a reformer from within the system breaks ranks. More often happens this way than through an "anti-system movement".

Apparently Chavez has rung up Amabinalad to congratulate him, FFS!:mad:

Why does that surprise you? Iran and Venzuela have been allies for years.

The way I see this, the Western reporters in Iran only associate with the urban bourgeoisie. They never meet the ordinary people. Thus they worked themselves up to expect another "color revolution" like in the Ukraine, and now they can't accept that the Iranian people have been so impertinent as to vote against their wishes.

I always knew this would happen.

Interestingly they did the opposite when thaksin was unseated from power in thailand. They focussed on the rural people's support for the man.

The question isn't (solely) can you trust Fisk, but can you trust the bloke whose comments he reported?
Even if you can, he could well be swallowing what he's fed. The source is effectively 'a bloke down the pub' unless I've missed something.

Is Mousavi actually a reformist, or is that just a hat he's wearing?
