Prepare to be outraged, Brixtonites....

Ah memories of the old substation south. I wonder if the gents supping their cocktails now realise what used to go on where they are sat.

What was the name of the Sunday night at substation?

i got handed a flyer for substation south and i can still remember it as it made me laugh so much. there were loads of themed nights: boot camp - military wear night, toolbox - for men dressed as construction workers in hi vis tabards (you got in free if you wore a hard hat), blackout (no lights and a groping maze), y-front (underpant party - i think it was billed as south london's premier underpant party - crikey, how many are there?). i think there was also a night called dirty dishes and i think queer nation was on a sunday.

i doubt anyone will go, will they? or if they did, they wouldn't admit to it. tis rather a shameful activity after all.

Just remembered that the string quartet was actually the Balanescu Quartet. It was favourite bit of the night - sitting in the basement on plastic garden furniture, wearing leather trousers, listening to Kraftwerk played by a string quartet, while bearded men were having seven shades of hell beaten out of them in a room upstairs. Later on that evening, I danced on a podium.

I notice that the sign for Sins has been taken down and replaced with a Piano House one. Each time I had walked past, I tried to get a look to even see a door to the place but could see nothing. It was usually mid-afternoon though.

Could they have shut up shop so soon?

A couple of months ago I heard there was an unlicensed lap dancing club in Brixton. Can't be Sins, can it? Surely they wouldn't have publicised themselves so widely without a licence?

IIRC There's a shifty looking place down by Jamm that does "exotic table dancing" not too sure if that is licensed :hmm:

I was chatting to a councillor recently and it is definitely licensed. Must be somewhere else

Given that they organised a substantial campaign against a drug treatment centre on the same road a couple of years ago, I'm astounded they've not organised one against a strip club.

Well, druggies are druggies but strippers are strippers Bob. Shurely you can see the difference.

Yeh thats the somali joint...

Weird things with Sins is that during the day there's a sign outside advertising coffee and toasted sandwiches. Or is there a new cafe in there too?

Opus (of Acre Lane) has opened a second cafe there. I assume Philippe is only selling coffee and not providing extra services.

As I understand it they have an entertainment licence that includes "dancing".

Because of a bizarre categorisation in the 2003 Licensing Act, strip clubs with pole-dancing are in the same grouping as pubs and cafes offering music and dancing such as karaoke.

If premises have a licence as a bar or restaurant then they apparently aren't covered by the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1982, which requires "sexual encounter establishments" in London such as Soho peep shows to be separately licensed.

There were plans to change this through an amendment to the Policing and Crime Bill, but I've heard nothing since the bill was at second reading before the Parliamentary Summer Recess.

Currently at Report Stage in the House of Lords. Prorogation next week so it ain't far from becoming an Act. Haven't looked as to when the relevant clause
will come into force, but the Home Office is currently consulting on transitional arrangements http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/documents/cons-2009-sev/

I got the arse when Larry Flynts Hustler club opened up in Croydon. But only because Larry is a sleazeball and American. Well mainly because he is American.

I was just about to ask if anyone had been.

I tried to get in one night, but got turned away.

I also accidentally got locked in there one night and had to be rescued by the police and fire brigade :o but that's a whole different story :D
