is that traditional or new age? in fact what is it?
Mulching is spreading a protective layer of organic matter on top of your soil. You do it for various reasons - such as to keep moisture in, or to keep soil safe from frost, or to smother weeds. I will be spreading home-made compost. Over the winter it will be churned into the soil by worms, enriching the soil.
Other things I will be doing for winter this year include getting in a supply of tinned soup and fruit, flu remedies, loo roll, disinfectant and cat food. This is because if the flu virus behaves as predicted, and affects a lot of people simultaneously (it is very infectious and easy to pass on), it is likely that I and my partner will get it, and need to be off work for up to 2 weeks each. It's not an especially dangerous flu ( in its current form) but it is very contagious and for most people who get it, temporarily debilitating. I hope it does not mutate into a form which is more dangerous and virulent.
If, as expected, very large numbers of people simultaneously get the flu at its peak time, and up to half the country is ill with it, or convalescing from it, or looking after people with it, then this will affect essential services and there will probably be temporary shortages in shops (because of shortage of delivery drivers and shop workers) which could go on for about 2-3 weeks.
Hence I'm stocking up, a couple of extra tins every time I shop, until I have enough for 2 people for 4 weeks. It does no harm, and if the flu doesn't kick off and follow the expected peak flu season pattern, it's no big deal because there are bound to be times when I'm ill, or its shit weather, and not having to go to the shops for supplies will be a boon.
