I can accept the 'pisspoor metal band with an image change' accusation towards bands like Pearl Jam and STP, but Nirvana? If you listen to Bleach if anything you'll find they were more of a grunge band to start with and then went a bit more metally for Nevermind, then went back hardcore again with In Utero.

one last time. Yes all the above bands don't sound exactly the same.
i am well aware of this.

The reason they are all in this particular poll together is because they were all popular with late teens/early 20s who were into 'grunge' (as a catch all term) in the early 90s to some degree.

Now how come nobodys voted for Smashins Pumpkins or STP? i though siamese dream was ace.
