'Pre-punk '70s' band reforming - but who?

There have been rumours of a Mott The Hoople reunion.

Mott reunion?

Next year (2009) sees the 40th anniversary of Mott's formation. Original organist Verden Allen let slip in an interview recently that all five members were getting back together for the occasion. It seems two gigs in London (Hammersmith?) are being lined up, with other gigs and maybe an album as well.

Coupled with news that bassist Overend Watts is no longer opposed to a reunion, and unconfirmed reports that drummer Dale Griffin has started practising the drums again (and Overend the bass!) it seems a reunion might be on the cards.

Bear in mind that Watts and Griffin haven't played live for 30 years. I am not privy to any insider information - I know as much as you do. A source close to the band says not to expect anything to be tied down until Spring 2009 at the earliest, so it seems there may be some major hurdles to clear before anything can happen. Do not book plane flights, etc, until everything is 100% confirmed. We've been here before with talk of a reunion, major record label signings, only for it to come to naught.
I hope they don't. They were a great live band and I wouldn't want it to be embarrassing like the Pistols.:o

Hunter can still knock out a good set when he wants to.....although I've not seen him for the past 2 or 3 years.

I saw him a few years back with Mick Ralphs and it was a great night.
I saw that tour and the one (two?) afterwards. Yeah Hunter's still a good turn live even as he approachs his 70th birthday! His last album was good as well. Not sure about the other members of the band though they haven't played for a long time.

Yeah...could be good.

Rod's voice is fucked now, but MacLagan's being playing some great gigs the last few years and performing Ronnie Lane songs. Ronnie Wood is drunk, or sober, depending on which paper you read, but can play regardless, Kenny Jones will just sit quietly and do as he's told, Tetsu plays jazz now and was never a good face anyway - couldn't hold his liquor or his drugs - they effectively turned him into an alcoholic...I can't see him returning for the gig. Maybe they'll use Daryll Jones from the Stones, he's solid enough to do the job, stand at the back and just get on with it. I don't wanna see someone well known stepping into Lane's shoes.

Struggling to remember where TF and in which band I saw MacLagan fairly recentlyish, and in what circumstances

ETA

He was in Billy Bragg's band for a while ..... back in 2006?

Only two of them died. The singer and a guitarist.

Oh, and a backing singer, iirc.

More have died since.

Yer all wrong - its Lynyrd Skynyrd innit!

Thought they could never reform again? IIRC. when the bassist died a few years back, that was the absolute end because there were not enough original members left to continue the name.

Unless they have cloned one or two in the meantime? :hmm:
