Pre-gig Veggie place for Friday night

That's a real shame about St Francis, it was really good for a while. I had an ok veggie burger (well haloumi and something) at the Ritzy cafe/bar but the chips were crap - they were kind of rubbery on the outside. Maybe a one off, but incredibly bad.

gaijingirl, what's veggie and good on the Ichiban menu? There's a decent noodle soup, but not that much choice?

Just a few things off the top of my head....

Tempura in various ways - eg veggie tempura, tempura soba, tempura udon, tendon (tempura on rice)
several really nice spinach dishes - especially horenso gomae
vegetable gyoza
various traditional vegetarian maki rolls (kampyo/kuri/tamago) as well as some Western style ones (avocado). Possibly some veggy temaki too.
tofu "steak" (make sure they don't put katsuoboshi on top!)
agedashi dofu
I think they do a good miso soup too - can't remember

There's also some non-Japanese (mostly Thai) veggie stuff, which I've not had...

Haven't eaten in there yet but The Ritzy menu looked ok.

Also as a vegetarian and lover of Japanese food, I would choose Ichiban over Fujiyama every time. (but I know that Fujiyama is popular with lots of other people too).

we took a Japanese friend to Fujiyama once. She giggled throghout the entire meal.

:D:D

We've had 4 different Japanese lodgers and they've all rated Ichiban.

Fujiyama is nice enough, but it's a bit like Wagamama - faux Japanese. Gyoza is Chinese attempting some Japanese food (as are many many south London Japanese restaurants - eg the one in Streatham, the one in Balham (Mount Fuji?), Edo in Crystal Palace). Doesn't mean they're terrible of course.

Fujiyama is a bit whack - lots of the food seems to come in what's virtually a pasta sauce.

Ichiban's food is fantastic, but it's not really a "sit down restaurant meal" sort of place...
