Pre-buyer's remorse (tv related)

roll-screen can be mounted on the wall, and be rolled away after use.

cieling mount the projector in a cradle. actually takes up less space than a tv.

*looks smugly at massive rolled up screen and tasty projector in living room*

isn't the colour balance a bit crap on those?

See the thing is i recetly finished fallout3 or rather i got to the point where i didn't want to play it anymore, at the end of it i had a ton of cash and things to trade but seemingly nothing worth spending it on it's the

I ummed and arr'ed for a bit about gettign my new screen in the end went with a sony over others as the colour to me at least seemed infinately better.

Even if they don't have the model you want in store go to curries or comet and stand next to (and back from) the screens to get an impression of the size then ask some important questions:

Is it 100 hz (for gaming this is better)
do i need 1080p over 720p (the answer is likely to be no even for console games)
what arieal am i using to get the tv signal feed (standard digital tellybox - sky virgin freeview)
can i get a digital signal where i am (this will inform the above)
What is important to me about the screen(colour/depth of field/pixelation/easy of use etc)
what will it primarly be used for (not pointin having the lastest bravia 2 60" screen if you have a 10 foot wide room and are planning to watch via standard ariel it'll look shit)
what component connectors does it have and how many(scart anologe hdmi svideo rbg etc)
are you buying a home theater kit with it?

It took me 6 months of research to work out what system i wanted and how i wanted it to work with the right connectors etc and the thing is i could have waited but am happy that the screen just buy what you think suits you really...

And a further £5 a month (+£75 one off) for the HD V+ box that you'll desire

As far as I'm aware, there's only one V+ box and there's no extra charge for it. Certainly wasn't for me.

I get their full package of phone, broadband and TV (minus the sky premium channels) for £45.

Course, there's fuck all actual HD content on Virgin "HD"...

You're missing the point, it upscales all the SD stuff so it makes it look great. And no, I know, it'll never be as good as proper 1080p stuff, but it still looks superb.

aarrrrrrrgh, :D it's a pirates delight.

Plays 1080 mkv x264 like silk :) (downscaled to 720p on mine) (and almost anything you can download, wmv, avi, xvid, h264, vhs rips etc). Apple TV without the Apple.

Also worth considering Western Digital's new box WD HD - its a media player with a couple of USB connections to plug your drives/memory sticks into. Looks like it plays anything including mkvs and vobs, has a sexy looking interface and it's only £79.99 ;) . Santa is bringing me one for Xmas, and I don't feel too guilty about 79 quid..

As far as the new telly goes...relax about the "size" of it - I've seen so many people's living rooms that look tiny because they've got a huge telly dominating everything. Revel in your nicely proportioned 26" screen sitting quiety in the corner. Smile as you admire your pile of "old" ps2 games that you bought 3 for a tenner, whilst your friends sink deeper into Wii-induced-pauperism! If your friends turn up their noses, well fuck 'em!

No, you're missing the point.

Sky HD >>>>>>>>> Virgin HD.

Getting actual HD content is so much better than paying for upscaled SD. It's like pretending your upscaled DVDs are the same as BluRays.

They're not, they're not even close.

Still, don't worry your lil fanboi head about it. ;)

*pat*

That's because you're buying one of their premium packages so they 'let you off' the £5 a month fee, similar to the discount you get on Sky+ subscription on the higher packages.

Not sure if you can wangle a free V+ box. Probably possible, but only if you're on a premium package or can be arsed to fight. It's £75 at the mo.

No, you're missing the point. I've acknolwedged that proper HD will always be better than upscaled SD. I also don't care who does the upscaling, Sky or Virgin, as long as SD is upscaled. Upscaled SD should be a minimum standard, regardless of 1080p or gold hdmi cables.

Sky has a much better selection of HD channels, it just costs more to get them. If you just want a basic package that upscales normal telly, then Virgin is probably the cheaper option and you also get the benefit of superior broadband.

I subscribed to Sky's HD service but unfortunately they couldn't get a signal from my house so I used Virgin instead. All things considered, I think I'm probably better off with Virgin. I use the on demand content far more than I'd ever use the extra HD channels.

My not-quite-expert op: stick with a CRT until everything is aligned and HD is up and running fully. A good CRT beats a typical HD Ready or plasma screen hands down for picture quality, esp if you have Freeview or Virgin.

Yep. Still better in a lot of ways than more expensive HD flat screens, but you don't get the mate impressing potential nor the wall candy.

CRT is just your bog standard old skool type, right?

Cathode ray tube - not bog standard if you have a decent one - you can get them dead cheap second hand now cos loads of numptys are ditching them for less good but fancy HDRs and plasma screens.
It's the widescreen con debacle all over again.

That looks superb for the price. The 4100-sh I've had for 18 months now and it seems a bit overpriced by today's standards. Especially with the cheap price of hardrives now.

I just want to say that I love each and every one of you that has contributed to this thread. I have a warm Christmassy feeling as a result of it.

Yeah, do not buy an HD TV unless you have an HD (or upscaled SD) source to view using it. If you've just got a freeview box and a Wii, the CRT will always look better.

If you have Sky HD / Virgin or a PS3/Xbox 360/Blu-Ray Player then the HD TV will always look better.

dont forget to look on Which? too

eta...someone may have already suggested that....i didnt realise how long this thread was

it des look sweet and as of next year all channel 4 will be hd s will some other channels regardless of if you can see it or not, vigin's got it's hd service sorted in a way which sky just haven#t even though they are still a pack of cunts...

OOO, that's a nice piece of kit...I presume I can hook it up to the PC as well? Hmmm*thinks*

Not sure whether the WD HD will hook up easilly to a pc, rather than a USB storage drive, although according to this site

"* Network Connectivity Workaround: Use NAS (Network Attached Storage) with USB and Ethernet.
Confirmed: In short, this WD box does not see the difference; USB drive is a USB drive."

I've not had too much success with NAS stuff in the past though, so I'd probably wait until somebody posted a walkthrough before I attempted it.

Having said that, the dual USB drive thing is perfect for my use. Probably put all my music on one 3.5 drive and tuck that out of the way, and refill a few gigs of video onto a 2.5 drive and plug that in every couple of weeks until I'd watched everything.

Yeah, I suppose it's just a question of copy stuff over from the PC to the HD before re-connecting it to the WDHD...

If my computer wasn't in the same room as the TV, I'd be looking at one of these 'media extender' jobbies. Ideally something that can host loads of drives, play every format in the world, share it all on the network, and manage my downloads.

But I'm not looking for one. No I'm not. Not yet. No sir. No need for it. Which means I don't want it. Uhn uh.
