Pre-buyer's remorse (tv related)

720p is HD FFS. It's just not 1080p HD. You'll be fine for BDVD and HDTV, just won't be able to watch BDVD at full resolution.

TVix 4100SH

OOO, sounds interesting...so it's basically a harddrive and media player?

That'd explain how we were able to clearly see individual flower heads in a long shot when watching a BDVD of jumper - we're about 7" away from the TV!

It's only a tv, it's not gonna change your life or anyone else's. If you want it and you can afford to then buy it. I wouldn't but then I have a flat full of junk/precious things/tat/stuff and am beginning to realise how much I depend on acquiring stuff to keep me happy.

I often have crazy fits where I must have MUST HAVE a new guitar. I read up on them check out deals and work myself into a frenzy. Then I tie myself down and wait for the feeling to pass (weeks). When the feeling has gone I wonder what the fuck I was thinking.

I recognise this. I've been doing it for over 20 years. :hmm:

It seems to have spread to camera lenses recently too.

aarrrrrrrgh, :D it's a pirates delight.

Plays 1080 mkv x264 like silk :) (downscaled to 720p on mine) (and almost anything you can download, wmv, avi, xvid, h264, vhs rips etc). Apple TV without the Apple.

I've been trawling the internet every single day for hours on end looking for the LCD TV I want to go down in price but it's going up. :(

You could buy a television that fills up an entire wall in the most amazing quality of visual reproduction brighter, sharper and in every way better than the best movie film yet invented. But the programmes will still be the same old crap that is on now. Why bother?

Your friends might be impressed when they see the set for the first time but after a while they will have seen these sets or bought them for themselves and just started to take them for granted.

If you are going to be watching DVDs why not spend the money on buying and renting the DVDs and not worry about the television? A bigger screen just means that you can watch it from further away. Unless you have a massive room and space for half the street to come in and watch it then a smaller but good quality HD set will do nicely.

Quick life story - I got kicked out of home when I was 16 and booted out of college when I was 17. I worked a load of shitty jobs for a few years before clawing my way up through my current profession to a position where I am finally earning some decent money. This is the first time in my life I've ever been able to afford stuff like this, I think I deserve it and yet the idea of getting them kind of leaves me a bit cold because of the large chunk of money involved. Like, I do want one but I can't muster the same enthusiasm my friends can about what is, basically, an oversized tv with slightly better picture quality.

I'd rather spend the money on a holiday - that genuinely does excite me, however, mrs k is a teacher and can only go at certain times (the hugely expensive ones) and there's no point me going on my own cos I'm too far gone and would spend the whole time pining.

there's your answer in bold. You don't really want one, you just think you should. Spend the money on something you really want and can see/feel the value of :)

Ignore the girls. They'll never understand the joy gained from watching Bruce Parry's Amazon in HD on a massive screen :(

You'll have to get either Sky HD or Virgin (HD as standard) to make it worth it though, Mr Ken, sir.

Well, the problem is that non HD TV looks shit on a big screen. I'd argue that it's a must, but maybe others will disagree. Virgin's basic freeview-esque package is dirt cheap with a phone line, and that's HD.

Not convinced that's true Chris. Non HD content looks crapper on a big LCD/Plasma screen than a CRT that's for sure. Analogue's still fairly warm and bearable on a big screen.

Ah, really? What sort of price is it per month for basic? I've currently got a great broadband connection with O2 that requires a BT line and I've always hated hated hated Virgin whenever I've dealt with them in the past and I've also always been reluctant to give Sky any money because I hold them responsible for many many ills. Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut, on the other hand - if it's the only way I can get a decent tv picture then principles never gave me a crystal clear viewing of Emmerdale, so fuck 'em.

Ok, analogue looks ok, but how long's that around for? Freeview looks shiiiiit. Something to bear in mind when convincing Mrs Ken that it wasn't a waste of money:

"but TV looks shit now, it was fine before. This TV is rubbish"
"Yeah, but it looks ok when I play my computer games"
"You selfish fuck. I'm leaving you."

BE WARNED.

£16 a month for 10MB uncapped broadband (it's much nicer to use than ADSL), freeview channels, and phone line.

That is a real possibility. She's so sceptical it does my brain in, considering this is all my money I've saved and whatnot. She's like one of those old women still thinking in pre-decimal terms.

I still remember plugging my TV in, before Virgin was installed. The innocent sadness on her face broke my heart...

"Chris, is it broken?"
"No darling, it's not"
"Oh"

£16 a month for 10MB uncapped broadband (it's much nicer to use than ADSL), freeview channels, and phone line.

That package is actually £27 a month.

Its actually £16 PLUS £11 for the phone line, and you HAVE to have the phone line to get the rest for £16.

Not at all as good as I initially thought, how annoying.

Course, there's fuck all actual HD content on Virgin "HD"...

Well first of all you need to buy the £75 Virgin Plus box.

Then the only HD on telly is the BBC HD channel, which probably has fuck all on it.

Most new films available in the filmflex on demand service have HD versions, but these are MORE EXPENSIVE than the usual versions! £5 a film, what a rip off!

And a further £5 a month (+£75 one off) for the HD V+ box that you'll desire

roll-screen can be mounted on the wall, and be rolled away after use.

cieling mount the projector in a cradle. actually takes up less space than a tv.

*looks smugly at massive rolled up screen and tasty projector in living room*
