My mum used to make us prawn cocktail starters for Xmas dinner cos she thought it was "a bit posh"..... maybe prawns cost more in the 80's or something.....

I remember Orange Juice being a starter in Restaurants.... :D

i don't, but the missus does and when she tells me about she gets a wistful look in her eyes and all the furniture and curtains and carpets start turning brown and orange....

It depends how it's done, gotta be nice prawns, crisp lettuce, a decent sauce and some buttered brown bread. Otherwise it can just be a gloopy fishy mess that's biggest impact is causing more washing up.

Grapefruit with a cherry on top?

Sexy food :)

Oh yes - it was the cherry that made it classy

I also liked as a kid "melon boats" when they would stick one of those plastic sword things in it with a bit of orange on to make it look like a sail.

I may have to write to Heston Blumenthal to see if he can do some updates version of that :D

I was once punched by a fragile looking old dear, who was determined to get the last two remaining cartons of prawn cocktail in M&S early one christmas eve.

My mother had despatched me to get some for her christmas table. She made something else that year!

woah, i didn't do it only because i guessed that it was something that you would do! it was mostly just rage i guess it is a long story i can't really go in to it here

Yeah, me too. When I started eating out, it was the height of sophistication to go to a Berni Inn or similar place, and have prawn cocktail, steak and chips then Black Forest gateau.
