Power Ballads

Heart - 'where are you?' and 'alone' - Bad Animals is, imho, a great album :o
Foreigner - 'I wanna know what love is' - men on girders, gospel choirs - how can it fail?

Ah, happy days...

*wanders off to get poodle perm*

There's a commercial for the 'Power Ballads' compilation on TV at the moment ('not available in stores' - who would have thought, eh?) Foreigner, Journey, Scorpions, Whitesnake, White Lion... it really takes me back to, um, a place I'd rather not be.

Peter and the Test Tube Babies - All About Love

Classic Power Ballads

Here's a nice ballad, like the six thousand others.
It's a love song again, it'll probably get covered.
No, the drums don't come in yet, that's in three bars time.
It's just me and the piano, and this sweet lullaby.
Here are the drums now, and a power guitar chord.
And my voice goes up a key, just in case you get bored.
Now I rhyme loads of cliches, like above, love and dove.
Girl like you, the things you do, and it's all about love.
This is the drop out part, where the drop outs drop out.
It's just me and the piano again, just before I start to shout.
Now I am shouting, the ends building up,
everything gets louder, and it's all about love.
Here's a nice ballad, like the six thousand others.
It was a love song again and it'll probably get covered.

Blimey, two pages in and not an Orang Utan in sight! :D

Now, I think Phil Collins the man is a right royal fuckin' breadheaded, fax machine-fellating twat and all that but, er, I have to confess to thinking that 'In The Air Tonight' and 'Against All Odds' are actually quite good. I also must confess to rather liking Foreigner's 'I Want To Know What Love Is' and Heart's 'These Dreams'... :o

Practically all that other big-haired, shoulder padded, howling-into-the-MTV guff can take a running jump though, 'cause it just reminds me of being a depressed, angst-ridden 12-year-old and the reason why I had to find The Smiths...

At this point I think I should mention the heart- arse game. Just find a song with the word "heart" and swap it with arse. So we have " Unbreak my arse" by Toni Braxton and "Total eclipse of the arse", plus "achey-breaky arse" - Billy Ray Cyrus.

Go on, have a go.......

Actually my respect for Phil Collins has gone up today. How many artists would include a full list of tribute bands on their website.. Cool..

On a more recent tip, I heard Enrique Inglesias' "Hero" on the radio today and I like quite a bit. Also not sure if it's a "power" ballad per se but Daniel Bedingfield's "If You're Not The One" is beautiful.

And yes Meat Loaf's "Anything For Love" needs to be mentioned. I'd love to hear Jim Steinman write a musical.

If it's gonna be the Scorpions, it has to be Still Loving You, surely?

Time, it needs time
To win back your love again
I will be there, I will be there
Love, only love
Can bring back your love someday
I will be there, I will be there

I’ll fight, babe, I’ll fight
To win back your love again
I will be there, I will be there
Love, only love
Can break down the wall someday
I will be there, I will be there

If we’d go again
All the way from the start
I would try to change
The things that killed our love
Your pride has built a wall, so strong
That I can’t get through
Is there really no chance
To start once again
I’m loving you

Try, baby try
To trust in my love again
I will be there, I will be there
Love, our love
Just shouldn’t be thrown away
I will be there, I will be there

If we’d go again
All the way from the start
I would try to change
The things that killed our love
Your pride has built a wall, so strong
That I can’t get through
Is there really no chance
To start once again

If we’d go again
All the way from the start
I would try to change
The things that killed our love
Yes, I’ve hurt your pride, and I know
What you’ve been through
You should give me a chance
This can’t be the end
I’m still loving you
I’m still loving you, I need your love
I’m still loving you

C'mon, you're just not trying hard enough:

Guns n' Roses - November Rain
Skid Row - I Remember You
Poison - Every Rose Has Its Thorn

All together now, lighters in the air!

"Every rose has its thorn
Just like every night has it's dawn
Just like every cowboy sings a sad, sad song
Every rose has its thorn"

(Do all cowboys really sing sad, sad songs? Not much job satisfaction in riding the range?)

Hmmm....lets think.....tinkly piano bit, big drums, birds nest haircuts and backing musicians that look like Kevin Keegan, and, above all, had to a 'POWERPLAY' on that 'No Limits' show that Jonathan King used to do.

This genre surely belongs to Pat Benatar, REO Speedwagon, Magnum, Glass Tiger, FM, Cher 'If I could turn back time', Quarterflash, Survivor, Meatloaf, and any of those featured on that 'rock hell' section of this site.

They all wanted to be death-metallers but didn't quite have the testicular fortitude :D

Love is a Battlefield and If I Could Turn Back Time hardly hardly qualify as ballads! A lot of the power ballads did come from soft rock or commercial heavy metal groups showing they could do sensitive as well as rock (Whitesnake, Guns n Roses, Heart) though.

No power ballads on Magic today :(

I'm having to make do with the few cropping up in VHM's Classic 500.

Heart have been on twice already

Magic or Heart on the minicab radio after being out to a club just cannot be beaten. Just soothes you home. Power ballads make it even better.

So you've never been moved by a power ballad? It's OK to feel guilty and/or soiled afterwards. Apparently.
ok, ok! I own up...

I love "wanted, dead or alive" by bon jovi :o :o :o

damn you carters, I nearly got away with it
