Potters Bar Town v Hamlet (Isthmian Premier Division) Saturday 22nd February 2025

A second consecutive Saturday on the road. I've flagged this one early, as it's being played at King's Langley FC due to ongoing conversion of Potters Bar's own ground to a 3G surface. The ground is on the main road inbetween King's Langley and Apsley stations on the Hemel Hempstead line out of Euston, with the latter slightly closer at around 1 mile.

If you are driving the clubs advice when I went was to park in the then free town centre car parks. From memory they said it's a ten minute walk but I suspect most people will take a couple of minutes longer. There was a lovely looking boozer close to where I parked but alcohol and the M25 don't mix, so I didn't try it. It's an affluent area, probably not the cheapest. Lots of people ignored the advice and parked along the A road the ground sits off. The ground has a lot of character, squeezed in by a railway line and a canal. I fly back to the UK at stupid o'clock that day so probably won't fancy driving round the M25 post match and will give it a miss. A shame, I'd like to have gone back.

Matchday information from DHFC website:

N.B. the pubs mentioned are on the walking route from Kings Langley Station, which is a longer walk. From Apsley Station you've got the Paper Mill (Fuller's) opposite the station on the river, the Red Lion about halfway on the main road, or this place next to the ground:

Keep an eye on the socials

"As a result of overnight rain there will be a precautionary pitch inspection at 10:30 this morning ahead of our game with Potters Bar.

As soon as we have any updates we will let you know."

Other results were reasonably helpful again, with Hendon and Canvey both losing, Bognor beat Bowers 1-0 with a penalty in the battle of the bottom two (a goalless draw would have been ideal) and the Hastings pitch unsurprisingly succumbed to the wet weather. Only downside was the three clubs immediately above us all won, but catching them isn't the first priority. I'm still confident we can pick up 18-20 points from the 11 remaining games, and if we can achieve that we should climb a few places higher.

It now looks quite a good piece of scheduling to have the London Cup match on Tuesday before next weekend's home game with Lewes.

A rather scrappy game played at a frantic pace. We won it with the one moment of real quality when Porter dropped off his marker outside the box and slipped a beautifully weighted pass through the centre for Bremang, who coolly shuffled it past the keeper and fired into the empty net.

We had to defend a lot of set pieces and there were one or two hairy moments, but ultimately Potters Bar's delivery into the box lacked the quality to punish us.

A good battling performance away from home on a damp and chilly evening, but Mark Marshall stood out for me with a really classy display from start to finish.
