Let's get something straight: I was fucking tired...knackered if you will, when I started this thread. The last thing I wanted to do was travel to find a couple of fucking potatoes. Is that okay? I don't want your pity either.
Spuds that are kept in the fridge come out of it in a disgusting state. I'm sorry but I don't agree with that method of storage and it isn't advised by those in the know either.
A) If you didn't want any sympathy, why start a ranty thread about it? You clearly weren't looking for hints on where you might buy better potatoes, as those who offered such advice earlier in the thread discovered.
B) 'Those in the know?' such as veg producers, like the one who gave me that advice? (I used to clamp them before). You do know every potato in the country is harvested by November at the latest and then those are stored for sale until new spuds start to appear in late summer? I'll admit, the veg producers' cold storage is often a bit warmer than 5 degrees, but I have kept potatoes for months like this and fully expect to be eating the King Edwards and Duke of York I harvested earlier in the year all the way through to late spring. The key is to keep them dry and dark, its no good if they get damp, they will then go off.
But I mash them quite happily, even though they are 'salad' potatoes. I like them
