I heard a track from it last night...might have been on Freak Zone. I was stunned it was Portishead. I had them more pegged as music to mong/sleep to. I will most likely buy the album.

Picked Third up last week for 7 quid. I really like it, even though by now I can hardly ever listen to Dummy any more.

I'd love to see a dinner party with Third on in the back ground...

...though i can imagine that scen in some Lars Von Trier film...:hmm:

Third: Most definately not crap.

i used to love dummy, but found on re-purchasing a couple of years ago that i never want to listen to them again.

might give the new one a go, at some point...

I've been listening to Third over the last couple of days and I really like it.

I have immense trouble listening Dummy all the way through as it's so intense...

In the eyes the music press though Portishead were something that happened in the 90s so no matter what quality they produce now it will be ignored

I think they were good at the time (of the first album). However, unlike Massive Attack, who still sound fantastic (IMO) they've dated far more and don't really interest me now at all. I only heard bits of the 2nd and didn't bother at all with the third.

Yeah, that's why Pitchfork rated it as their number 2 top album of 2008. It actually got a lot of attention and respect from the music press.

The "Protection" album is pretty weak though and the last one was just so... nothing.

Yeah, tbh most people say they aren't that keen on Protection, but it was what we listened to in the evenings in India, getting stoned and enjoying the warm nights, a really happy time in my life, and the album always brings that to mind for me :)

The people I travelled with had really random music tastes, I think it was the only thing that we all concurred was great.

Agree 100th window was a really disappointing record....

I think Protection has its momnets (and while not a classic by any means) bridges the gap niceley between Blue Lines and Mezannine....

That said, the cover of Light My Fire is really really really bad.

But I think protection is better than Blue Lines. Blue Lines has two superb tracks (the obvious and Safe From Harm) and a lot of quite good but not outstanding ones. Protection is good all the way through except Light My Fire.

I guess if it brings back memories then yeah cool, you can't beat things like that. But, Light My Fire, Heat Miser, Sly, Weather Storm aren't that great, they just go nowhere. And I can't listen to Spying Glass after getting to know the Horace Andy original.

No way, Blue Lines is way better. I like the tunes where they rap as a group, ie "Blue Lines", "Five Man Army" and "DayDreaming". Karmacoma is indeed great, it's one of those tunes, yet again, when they rap as a group.

"Be Thankful..." and "Lately" piss over anything from Protection too.

i can't listen to Dummy any more either. overkill i reckon.

i'll try Third though..

edit: agree, the dinner party ref is rubbish. everyone would be staring into space, or weeping, by the main course.

i'm confused. is Third Massive Attack's new album then?

(i should really know this if so) :D :o

clueless foo strikes again!

Ummm... interesting post.... :hmm:

How about Unfinished Symphony and Lately - they're classics....from Blue Lines...

Personally I don't prefer Protection to Blue Lines, I just find it a more brooding , and introspective record (introspective being fine imo) I especially rate weather storm, spying glass, and Better things

I think Mezannine is/was their peak ...

Sorry: re Massive Attack derail but they are one of the few things which can actually arouse some passion within me , or get me sufficiently motivated to be arsed to type anything on forums.

Agre the 1st record has sadly not dated well , which is a shame , as i loved the record at the time.... A sad case of overkill...

The 3rd record has better production, but I havent taken it to my heart unlike their first two albums... Which is a personal disappointment as it was a 11 year wait...

You've never been to portishead have you? :D

Its a yuppie hell hole.

I paid a pilgramage to the place Portishead years ago...(something I had to get out of my system...) And I was disappointed. A curiously souless sterile place.... Never have I returned.

I enjoyed the walk between Clevedon and Portishead though.:)

I agree about Lght My Fire but the other tracks are great.

The third one is so much darker, slightly more geared towards the indie rather than trendy market. But being more an indie/rock man generally I do dig it...
