Port Forwarding

My router (Cable and Wireless MIMO) isn't on port forwarding so there's no idiot guide.

And when I go into the settings, theres no port forwarding menu. Virtual Server looks the most promising, but that doesn't seem to be doing the trick.

Any suggestions? I wanna get uTorrent and SLSK up and running on me new comp!

Virtual Server isn't what you need. Try looking under Administration, or Applications & Gaming, or something similar.

Dub: I don't know how you use your comp, but I only ever have one p2p program running at any one time. Because of this, I can use the same port for all of them. If you do likewise, you could try setting Slsk to use the same port as Azureus, seeing as that works.

Techies: I remember hearing that uPnP isn't particularly safe a few years ago and so I've always used manual port-forwarding myself. Have I misunderstood, or have there been improvements in this area which makes it less of a problem (whatever the problem ever was - I don't recall)?

On that Port Forward site, there's a Cable & Wireless router listed, and I know you said it isn't the same model as yours, but does it have a similar interface? Is there a menu which contains Advanced Configurations on the left hand side when you log in you your router? If so, it should be in there.

I tried that - there's no 'Port Forwarding' option on my 'Advanced Config' menu.

Oooh, I so need this thread.

I'm on a mac. I downloaded transmission. I apparently need to do this mysterious port forwarding thingy.

So I follow the instructions, type my ip address into my browser, and nothing. It doesn't come up with a config page or anything, just says the usual 'can't get to this page' type error screen.

I'm at a loss now what to do.

ps. I don't have a router - straight into my ntl cable modem.

Halp!

pps. my ip starts with 86 - that doesn't sound normal.

that's your external IP. Guessing you're on blueyonder.
To find your ip on the mac, open a console and type ifconfig.
It will probably say something like

192.168.1.3

that is your IP. To log into your router change the last octet (in this case the 3) to a one when you type it into your browser.

Also consult portforward.com for your router brand.

I'm with ntl actually, but yay, that makes sense thank you :)

Right, console has nowhere for me to type, it's just logs, so I assume you mean terminal?

I typed ifconfig in terminal and was presented with lots of gobbledegook, but next to inet it gave the 86. address. No other ip address there.

Grrrrrr.

It's ok, I'm a dildo.

A quick google search worked out that ntl ips do indeed start with 86. so that's fine.

I worked out that I actually had to do some weirdo port stuff in my sharing thingy-majiggy (technical hat on, as you can see) and actually disable stealth mode

So yeah ...

I've switched to Azereus now. D/l seems ok (got up to 80k). But uploading doesn't seem to be happening.

If i do the test it's telling me that the port isn't forwarded properly - I'm still not sure if I did that right on my shite router. Is 'port mapping' the same thing?

If your not getting upload then something isn't right.

Port mapping is port forwarding. I recommend that is better to use uPnP to port forward if your router supports it. Usually switched off, so needs to be enabled.

What ISP are you using. Some like Tiscali have traffic shaping during peak hours 4-12pm or something like that.

Switch back to uTorrent as its not the resource hog Azereus is. You can enable uPnP in there. If both are enabled then you should be in business.

Probably...mapping/forwarding all boil down to the same thing. Allowing incoming connections on a particular router portno to be forwarded to a specified internal IP address and portno. There's generally two different ways of doing this, either enabling uPnP on your router and PC and let the machines sort it all out automagically, or do the grunt work yourself and manually add Azureus port forwarding to your router's config.

In azzie, the way you see if you have NAT problems is to look and see if any torrents you're seeding or downloading have peers that connected to you first, and not you connecting to them. (in Azureus that means they show as peer type Remote rather than type Local) If you do have any peers of type R, that shows incoming connections are working correctly and that your port mappings are OK. AFAIK that's also the same logic used to set the status of the NAT button on Azzie's status bar.

if you want help with your router, it might be an idea to say what is is and exactly what you changed to try to get incoming connections working.

Oh, one other thing. you can both upload and download via the same peer connection, so downloads working but uploads not is unlikely to be related to incoming connections not working. It might be something as simple as nobody looking to download any of your seeded torrents at the moment so you can't upload.
