Porridge - how do you have yours?

Masterdarkone has his with greek yougurt and bananas and penut butter and honey. I have mine with honey and goats yougurt and blueberrys:)

Cornmeal porridge is the best ever, Jamacian style , ie lots of sugar but is very fattening, but soooo comforting;) I recomend it for a chilly morning, one can often buy if from Jamacian cafes...

boiling water
once it's gone all thick then I'll add some soya milk

sometimes I add one or several of the following
brazil nuts
macademia nuts
walnuts
almonds
linseeds
sunflower seeds
sesame seeds
hemp seeds
dried guava
dried pineapple
chopped dates
coconut flakes
chopped dried figs

I usually put the fruit in while it's cooking so it heats up and absorbs the water but I put the nuts in at the end so they stay crunchy

I might add a tiny bit of honey or I might not, depending on how much fruit is in there

I love porridge

You've just reminded me that semolina for breakfast is also surprisingly good on a freezy cold day. Super-stodgy  though presumably not quite as good for you as porridge, since its made of wheat.

I've got a packet of wholemeal semolina which I bought on a whim, that doesn't really work in semolina recipes - I might try it as breakfast instead :) .

I find porridge cooked in milk really indigestible - I like oats cooked in water (sometimes with raisins or grated apple & cinnamon) with sugar, milk or cream on the top.

Semolina has to be cooked in milk though.

Water, no milk. One sliced & chopped banana added at the beginning. Raisins and brown sugar added at the end.

Try putting in some Cinnamon sticks while it's simmering....mmm.....mmm!
;)
This is good. Very good in fact. My mum used to do that when I was a kid. I think cinnamon is what's missing from my banana and raisin porridge.

BTW i noticed that this is your first post, so, what is it the locals say? Have an oaty biscuit of some sort, and dont let that dj bloke borrow five pounds from you?

milk

my mate (who's from scotland) makes lots of "sassenach pansy" gags about this, as apparently your supposed to use water, and broken glass, or irn bru or something.

I have just starting eating porridge last month as part of my - lol - health kick.

My preference is:

Common-or-garden Organic oats.

made with water not milk.

a wee tsp of acacia honey to sweeten.

A handful of dried organic "Berries 'n cherries" mixed in at the finish.

Luvverly.

SNAP!

So I started eating porridge for breakfast this week falling for all the low GI hype but in fact I'm hungrier than ever of a morning once I get to work.

Someone in the office told me that it was because I was making it with milk rather than water, but surely this can't change to GI-ness of the oats? Or is it because I've got the lazy girl type of porridge in sachets? It's only plain old Sainsburies and isn't flavoured like your "Oats So Simple"...I was fuller for longer with my Special K of a morning..
