They are definitely called Gala pies. I don't think it's cos they're from Gala(shiels), more likely a reference to them being a 'high days and holidays' kind of thing - all the wee towns and villages in the Lowlands have some kind of Gala Day in the summer. When I was growing up we went to the Gifford Gala every year to run three-legged races, guess the weight of the pig and give a token to the fierce looking WRI lady for a paper bag containing either a scotch pie or a slice of Gala pie, and a sticky bun, and a free ice cream
