Popular Demand. Is there any for an Urban Spanish class?

Folks, please let's keep it to English for now until we get something going. I can just about work out what you're saying if I think hard.

There's no need for anyone to lost confidence just now. I'm pretty sure we can work something out, having been in beginners classes several times with people of quite high abilities. I reckon we can ensure everyone gets something out of it if we go ahead.

Please register your interest and suggestions here and we can work through possible problems too, in an inclusive way. I'm planning on talking to folks from the other classes later this week and will report back then. No hurry and no worries :)

I've got some course books and kids books I'm happy to share, and I know you can borrow videos of Barrio Sesamo (Sesame Street) at the Instituto Cervantes, for example.
Think I've got a few kids books kicking around as well, and some good verb books. And my brother's got quite a few spanish/mexican films too, which I reckon I can borrow - might help with listening skills.

I have a few bits and pieces as well.

I also have a computer Spanish program, although I haven't used it yet so I don't know how good it is. Obviously I'm not allowed to copy it so if anyone PM'd and asked then there's no way it could find its way onto another disc. ;)

I'm up for some on-line learning. I'd really like to broaden my vocabulary, and that's really hard to do alone... :)

*raises hand*

I'm interested, but then I'd be a complete beginner so if people are going to be a little more advanced than that then let me know before I potentially make myself look like a tit... :o

Won't have time for this but, I'll be looking in occassionally.

Top tip:

LEARN THE GRAMMAR FIRST! Get a grip with the verb forms and tenses. Then learn the irregular verbs. Once you know how to conjugate the rest is just vocab building. It's a relatively easy language for English speakers to learn.

Agree with you but will say learning/remembering the grammar (especially the subjuctive...and the conjugations ) is the bugger.....it's relatively a phonetic language so pronuonciation is quite easy although does have some fuck off long words (5 syllables or more)that are a bugger to get out...

I'm interested. I learnt Spanish at school, but have forgotten all but a few basic words.

estoy listo

(had to use babelfish to translate what you wrote though - i'm v.rusty  )
Was just about to bump, because I keep seeing the French thread at top of New Posts.

Ah still need someone to teach us the basics like. I can't say much

Me llama Maddalene, vivo en Leeds. Tengo 2 chicos, ses llamas James y Jude..

no I can't even get that right! Help is needed. Only had about 6 lessons!

Whilst mango5 hasn't actually talked to me about this (too spangled, eh? :D), I'm happy to share the experience from the german class...

Unfortunately, our 'group' is a bit fractured because of the north/south divide (it's not so easy for Blind Lemon to get to north london after work, and equally inconvenient for a VERY pregnant comicstripgirl to trek to brixton and back when we can just meet in the pub ten minutes from her house in stokie).
So I ended up having a 'private lesson' with BL in the Albert the other day, reading some Schiller ballads (much to the amusement of some regulars) and chatting in German; and the other group has met in stoke newington a couple of times. I've prepared a couple of 'work sheets' (tehee, I quite like playing at being a teacher :D), goldenecitrone has brought along some music with corresponding gap-fill exercise, and apart from that we just do some general chatting in english and german; and have been to see a german film together.
I'm not sure how effective all this is and I'm not sure how much continuity there'll be long term, but so far we have met up four times and if nothing else have had a great time.

Good luck with your spanish project! :)

Thank you ma'am. There you go folks... I reckon some worksheets, music, videos etc linked with people who can meet up would be doable, at least worth a try. Will update lists later and think more about practicalities. I wasn't at all 'spangled' btw. I am pacing myself.

Yeah that's why I did it really, I was getting jealous of the french class.

Have a verbal test in Spanish today, was wondering if anybody could tell me if this is right:

Tengo tres hermana, la menor se llama Alice, es tonto pero buen realmente*, la segunda se llama Sandy, es sympatica y la major se llama Jayne, es muy ingelligente.

*its this bit I'm a bit unsure of, I wanted to say that she is daft but basically a good kid.

Would be much appreciated :)

Maybe i'm too late...Sorry! :(

Tengo tres hermanas. La menor se llama Alice, a veces (sometimes) es tonta pero realmente es buena persona. La segunda, se llama Sandy. Ella es sympatica. La mayor, se llama Jayne y es muy intelligente.

this sounds fun.

i like the sound of barrio sesame too. and what is the cervantes institute?

i'm currently redoing a GCSE course at morley. it feels like i've been learning spanish for years, without a huge amount of improvement, but it's still fun.
