Pop hits with weird time signatures...

Lots of Sparks stuff I think. This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both Of Us anyway, but I have no idea what it uses. No idea at all.

If you're a decent dancer (unlike me) try dancing to Solsbury Hill and you'll find that it's extremely difficult. :)

I've danced to it in my front room whilst pissed out of my head. Can't recall whether I found it difficult though.

Tori Amos - Spark. Did it gt anywhere near being a hit? Dunno. Good though.

The Cars - Just What I Needed, has a couple of odd bits in and the guitarist looks very Nigel Tufnel.

I don't get time signatures at all. I keep writing songs in weird time signatures and then it takes me about a day and a half to work out what I've done so I can add a beat to it. Whoever heard of a dancefloor classic in 17/32 ffs? I thought writing songs in weird time signatures was what you did to show off your mad skills. Was I born with the prog in me?

Next time I'm doing the drum beat first. Nowt wrong with 4/4 imo

Stranglers - Golden Brown?

It's done in 6/8 and 7/8 time signature (The instrumental bridges add an extra beat in every other measure, effectively producing a 13/8 time signature).

actually it sounds like 12/8 tbf, but that's not in any way a weird time sig . . .

I dunno, I think it's 4/4 but with rolling triplets over the top. Meh, whatever :)

I love you dodgepot, despite your hate, which washes over me.

Can anyone workout the time sig of this?

the verses are 4/4
But the key Hold TIght chorus has some 5/4 in it? or is it 6/4s? very confusing...

I think maybe the chorus goes 6/8, 6/8, 8/8 then loops?

ETA I think the chorus goes
6, 6, 8 then
6, ,6 ,10!

then in to 4/4 verses

The tune starts with the chorus btw, if you want to check
-----
ETA: I reckon the chorus goes
6, 6, 8 then
6, ,6 ,10!
6, ,6 ,10!
6, ,6 ,10!

Was looking for something completely different and stumbled on this thread. Don't even know if you will ever even see this, but that is a cool tune so maybe I can help.

First off, you are only going to be dealing with bars of 4 beats (4/4) or bars of 6 beats (6/4). So don't worry about it having any odd metered measures.

The way this song tries to trick the ear is in the way the measures are grouped, which is into 5 measure long phrases (broken into 3 measures then 2 measures - goes right with the "hold tight" lyric) and whether or not the 5th measure will be 4 or 6 beats long.

Any time you have a chorus it is a combination of two of the 5 measure long phrases (10 bars long) with the 10th measure being your bar of 6 beats.
Outside of that, the verses are 16 measures long and in 4 just as you said, except for the last measure, which is 6 beats long.
And the bridge is 8 bars of 4.
I know it might sound complicated, but it really isn't if you can count to 4 or 6 and know when to do so.

Here is when to do so :
I am going to write the form like this, if the 5th measure of the phrase is 4 beats then that will be in parentheses next to it or same for 6. (Ex: 5 measures (4) or 5 measures (6))
I already explained the 10 bar chorus phrasing above.

So here goes:
Intro- 5 measures (4)
5 measures (6)
5 measures (6)
5 measures (6)
Chorus 1 - 5 (4) and 5 (6)
Verse 1 - 16 measures (last bar 6 beats)
Chorus 2 - 5 (4) and 5 (6)
Instrumental 1 - 5 measures (4)
5 measures (6)
5 measures (6)
Chorus 3 - 5 (4) and 5 (6)
Verse 2 - 16 measures (last bar 6 beats)
Chorus 4 - 5 (4) and 5 (6)
Bridge - 8 measures
Instrumental 2 - 5 measures (4)
5 measures (4)
5 measures (6)
5 measures (4)
5 measures (4)
5 measures (6)
5 measures (4)
5 measures (6)
Outro Chorus - 5 (4) and 5 (6)
repeat chorus and fade out...

Fun song, thanks for sharing it.
