poor demand for this forum

Dammit. FFS is this it then?

Precedent suggested a sweary pissfit would follow. Scattergun insults. A 'lick my asshole, cunt' or two.

Fuck this fucking forum and its tolerance and manners.

Fuck you all.

This is exactly where this thread was heading, from the OP onwards.

There are only a few that actually know much about philosophy and they have argued about most of it for a while.

Then there are another group of people who think they know how to think, I count myself among these, but who know diddly about philosophy, we sometimes pop our oars into the forum or point and laugh from the sidelines.

Then there is the majority group of U75ers who, like the politics forum, give this forum a wide berth.

Thats about it - I think ..

To be honest, it was always going to be a rarely used forum. That's the nature of the deep andmeaningful stuff. This isn't general, you know.

I know this forum was never attractive to the majority of posters, but in years gone by it still held its own, and plenty of interesting posters and posts and threads could be found here. I never see those names any more, so i guess they've left the website.

It's always understandable that in the politics forums people get insulting and just bang on about the poster rather than the post, after all that's exactly a condition of politics, but when it happens in philosophy i can imagine it turning plenty of folk off. It seems to me that's what's happened here.

I shall do my best to put my theory to the sword by coming up with deadly interesting topics to filosofize about, and see if anybody's out there who wants to engage, or will it just be a disengage process...? After all, this particular thread has shown there are plenty of people who actually do visit the forum... as i suspected. The last thread here that ran and ran was about nothing, and now my thread about no demand has also caused, relatively, more than a ripple of brain activity.

That was not the gist of my OP. I know it's a more rarely used forum compared to others, but by its own standard it had become almost a relic compared to healthier days perhaps a couple of years back.

I was comparing this forum to itself in different times. Not this forum with other forums in the same time.

Because most threads in here turn into sub-"does the world disappear when I blink?" stonerisms.
When 'proper' philosophers give it a go, only those with enough book-learning can participate.

Yeah, but this forum has always had room for the 'book philosophers' and the more independent kind of philosophers. There's always been both kinds of threads. Until the last few months or year. Now regular names no longer come here, and the first page has hardly any active threads.

Maybe they're doing time in an ashram or temple or something trying to get to the next level...

I for one got tired of the stoner-philosophical type discussions that crispy is talking about.

No slight on the membership but on the history front there's plenty of quite busy history forums where you can have really entertaining on-topic discussions without someone popping up with no knowledge of basics. Imagine it's true of theory and phil.

I think that the decline of filosofy in society itself coincided with the decline in the use of the philophax. However the decline on these forums I suspect may be something to do with the posts of PhilorMax. The former is currently desperately trying to get a Socratic debate going in a thread on AIDs. Perhaps mind altering religion and mind altering chemicals lead to similar mind sets.

That crap hasn't been in here for two months at least. There's been two solid months of entertaining debate revolving around gorksi and his 'approach' since, overlapping with the science forum.

Philosophy is best undertaken with people who are willing to look at all points of perspective of an argument and keep to the subject of the thread title without resorting to name-calling. The ego gets the better of some people who waste time adding some stupid comment which has got nothing to do with the OP whatsoever!

"In this world, the optimists have it, not because they are always right, but because they are positive. Even when wrong, they are positive, and that is the way of achievement, correction, improvement, and success. Educated, eyes open optimism pays; pessimism can only offer the empty consolation of being right” – from the Wealth and Poverty of Nations by David Landes

'independent philosophers'?

You have to be kidding. Max Freakout stopped posting because people wouldn't agree to his nonsense.

Why don't you go and visit his own board, where everybody agrees with each other, that max is right about everything? Is that philosophy is to you?

:D

This is true. If only Max Freakout and Fela Fan could look at other perspectives without labelling those who disagree as closed minds.

:(

Yeh but that is like, not far out enough to be 'independent philosophy' so it doesn't count.

You have to ask valid and important questions like this:

What if the universe was like an atom in a bigger universe mannnn? And like, that was just an atom in another universe?

Either everyone is discussed out or maybe the longer days of summer have meant more RL activity?

Nights are drawing in so review this thread in a month for an update

We're all reading books about philosophy so we can come back to tackle the glittering edifice of Critical Theory with gorski again, but these things take time and effort.

Not that fela would ever get involved in one of those - far too 'close minded' and focussed on the book learnin' types for an independent free thinker like himself or max...

I've not even thought about or talked about max freakout. My thread had nothing to do with him.

Interestingly you continue to put forward your subjective interpretations as fact on this thread. Might you be part of the problem that the OP refers to?

Just exactly what do you hope to provide by way of meaning with this comment? How can it add to the debate? It is just so bloody subjective, and in equal measure, so bloody wrong.

I mean, i've read hundreds of books, and my job depends on my ability to critically read them.

It's comments like this, and those by dillinger, that really help downgrade this forum, and of course this thread. They are exactly what NoEgo's contribution pointed towards. It's really a bit sad.

Philosophy really ought to be able to rise above the cheap point scoring of politics. But here on urban it seems difficult to stay on course for some.

I think posters have left it because of this kind of post that i'm replying to. You are just so stuck in your own subjective measurement and judgment of people you barely know mate. Sad. You're far better than that really, so why do you do it?

I think Max Freakout stopped posting because he got banned several times for not engaging in debate.

I think what NoEgo said applies to you more than anybody else.
