Poll: Sports personality of the year 2008?

BBC Sports Personality 2008?

Chris Hoy for me - won't be disappointed if it is Becky Adlington or Joe Calzaghe.

Reckon it will be Lewis Hamilton though.

As long as it's not Andy Murray

I wanted Victoria Pendleton to win, but out of the options, I'd say Chris Hoy or Rebecca Romero.

I reckon Lewis will win it though.

from what I've seen, only Calzaghe and Murray actually have a personality. Adlington (and some of the others no doubt) seems very nice, but wouldn't exactly light a room up. And as Murrays personality is that of a total arse...Vote Calzaghe!

Chris Hoy's had some things to say about cycling provisions, and Brad Wiggins lamented four years ago how his spot on SPOTY was bumped for a dead horse. However, if you want personality in cycling, Cav has to be the man. An arrogant mouthy fucker, just like all the great sprinters.

As for Hamilton for overseas SPOTY, I don't think he gets within a country lightyear of Phelps or Bolt.

Thinking about it, I'm disappointed John Sergeant didn't get nominated.

And before you say he's not a sportsman, Torvill & Dean and Robin Cousins won it.

And that's not good enough for Sports Personality of the Year

Bloody fixed.

I've not even heard of most of these. I'd have to go for Martin Ling as well.

Sadken- You are aware he's coming to manage Swindon Town very soon, aren't you?

I will be very heartbroken if this turns out to be true. He's the first decent manager I've seen us have in 20 years supporting Orient. I suppose you could say Frank Clark too actually.

And everybody else's, so it seems. I always take it as a signal that they want to go when a player or manager says "they know where I am if they want to speak to me" which Ling has said about 4 times now. Can't blame him - his contract is up in 7 months and negotiations are on ice. I'd be gutted if he went though. I'd protest to get Hearn out, which is long, long overdue the thieving conniving cunt.

Only one of them was this year though.

Latest Bookmaker's odds.

Rebecca Adlington...Swimming......4/5
Lewis Hamilton........Formula One..2/1
Chris Hoy...............Cycling.........10/3
Joe Calzaghe..........Boxing..........40/1
Andy Murray..........Tennis...........50/1
Christine Ohuruogo..Athletics.......80/1
Bradley Wiggins......Cycling..........80/1
Ben Ainslie.............Sailing..........80/1
Rebecca Romero.....Cycling.........100/1
Nicole Cook............Cycling........100/1

RA's trainer's quote: "If Carlsberg made swimmers they'd make them like her."

William Hill's spokesman:

"I've been studying this event for 30 years and it still baffles me. I would also warn Rebecca that she, and not Lewis, will now need to avoid the recent curse of the favourites. Lewis last year and Darren Clarke in 2006 were both hot favourites on the morning of the show but got beaten."

I am suprised Nicole Cooke is such an outsider, either Nicole or Chris Hoy would get my vote, I too though think Vicky Pendleton should be there. Lewis Hamilton had a great year though so if he does win I won't be disapointed. Romero's story is fantastic too...overall it's good to see a strong year this year so at least it won't be a showjumper that wins...

In relation to Hamilton, I have a considerable amount of sympathy with the argument that he shouldn't qualify for the award as long as he's a tax exile. However, to suggest that he isn't a sportsman is ludicrous. The levels of fitness and endurance required to race a formula 1 car at the highest levels are immense.

If he was British, he might make my top ten. However, for me he still comes behind the majority of those nominated, plus one or two others such as Cavendish and Pendleton.

I wouldn't argue that he's not a sportsman, but he's won a World Championship in which there were about 4 people who could conceivably win, regardless of how well they performed. Not up there with any of the others for me.

Tyrone All Star and Ireland captain Sean Cavanagh has been named the BBC Northern Ireland Sports Personality of the Year for 2008.

Osprey, Wales winger and Amman Valley boy Shane Williams crowned his considerable sporting achievments by being voted BBC Wales Sports Personality of the Year 2008.

Endurance and concentration, but not fitness.

Hamilton's not got a personality so therefore doesn't count.

My vote's for Murray - the grumpy little fuck seems to have grown up a thousand-fold in the past year. I actually quite like him now as opposed to detesting him only a year ago.

He's also beaten virtually everyone put on the court with him, in one of the most high-profile and competitive sports in the world. Vastly superior achievement to Ms Addlington. Swimming, with respect, doesn't exactly hit anyone's radar unless it's the Olympics. And then only very briefly.
