Politipiggle (or the state of perception)

Do you see politicians as human beings?

  • Total voters
    16
  • Poll closed .
So what's your politics, then?

I'm politically apathetic, mostly. I believe a lot of my generation is- or they are poorly informed enough for it to amount to the same thing.

Im politically apathetic, but I keep myself informed. I was surprised when making this at how many of my otherwise very intelligent peers didn't know of (or didn't care to know) a lot of the major players or what they care about. Ignorance as a choice, almost. They get their news from buzzfeed and Facebook.

'kinnel

Mumsnet------>

Is there no place for apathy in the pantheon of political positions? I'd argue that the cynicism that infects popular discourse is simply Apathy's eloquent cousin
'My benefits have been cut and I've been assessed as fit to work even though I'm terminally ill.'

'Sorry, I'm apathetic.'

'We're going to start charging for basic health services because taxes meant to pay for the NHS are being funelled into private hands.'

'Not interested, I'm apathetic.'

'I was abused as a child by a cabal of politicians who used their influence to cover up their crimes.'

'Couldn't give a shit mate, I'm apathetic.'

Ah, but that's my point! (Cooking with charcoal now!)
Say the voting turnout is at 36% next month. How many of those voters are actually engaged enough to even know who most ministers are? How many are even aware of who their MP is before election day? I think the "witless" jibe is more a lament on the state of political awareness amongst the general population than a personal dig. Or at least that's how I'll take it;)

And yes, this isn't a board I would frequent (especially considering the poisonous messages that are now in my inbox), but since you are interested in politics, I thought you might be interested in a politically-themed work. And some of you must be, because some of you have requested copies of the pdf.

As for the 'im apathetic' comments- you might feel that they are ridiculous, but I guarantee most aren't aware yet of child abuse allegations aimed at past politicians. Or the fact that the worst off in this country are being cut loose at the bottom. Or who is even responsible.

Oh good job.

PMs of support by page 2.

ha ha, appreciated. But that wasn't what I was angling for. I just meant that this forum may dislike what I'm saying, but it's irrelevant. Even with the heightened interest from having 'minor' party visibility and talk of coalitions, voter turnout will still be low. To paraphrase TP, people simply want today to be followed by tomorrow.

TP?

Then you most definitely are not politically apathetic.

you misunderstand me. It's not that I love things the way they are. It's that I don't believe politics (in the media mainstream) allows for meaningful change. It's a kind of panto.

I'm not interested in overthrow, or revolution. I'm simply interested in the way people think.
