politicians you've met

Both briefly; two Liberals, David Alton and Paul Tyler.

I don't know if Bruce Kent counts as a politician but I eyeballed him (not at first recognising him so I looked again to make sure, he probably thought I was staring at him) across a magazine rack in the Smiths branch near Kings Cross. I was surprised at how big he was; he towered over me and I'm 6 foot one and a bit.

Tony Benn (bought me a cup of tea)
John Biffen (lent me a dinner jacket to go to a party)
Micheal Foot (sat near him on a flight to Dubrovnik)
John Prescott (offered me a tray of canapes, and wasn't amused when I said, "You done this before, haven't you?")
Kevin McNamara (through Hull Trades Council)
Kali Mountford (when she was a union rep in the CPSA)

david blunkett when he was shadow health, sat with him in a car (no he wasnt driving) on the way back from little place near chepstow to gloucester.. thought he was quite a nice bloke and he had some good ideas

met him again when he was home secretary at a conference, had somehow become a twat

dog was still nice though (assuming it was the same one)

This is what's so sad. Blunkett was one of my favourite politicians in the '80s. How on earth did he turn into the authoritarian curmudgeon we got to know if not love ten and more years later?

Lots. Thatcher, John Smith, Blair (very briefly), Mandelson, Galloway...as well as some of the newer ones like Gove (arsehole), some very minor ones too.

I've also met Hillary Clinton, during her trip to Indonesia at the start of the year. Alarmingly, she was incredibly reminiscent of Peter Mandelson - very inteligent, very polite, and distinctly non-human. Galloway was similarly intelligent, but you could honestly feel the "I will say and do whatever will benefit me most" vibe emanating off him.

Meeting politicians is one of the hazards you have to put up with being involved in trade unions i am afraid.... of the top of my head:

Tony Blair PM,
Tony Benn MP,
George Galloway MP,
Niel Kinnock MP,
Kim Howells MP,
Peter Hain MP,
Rhodri Morgan First Minister
Ron Davies MP/AM,
Arthur Scargill ,
Don Touhig MP,
Wayne David MP
Jayne David AM,
Lianne Wood AM
Jane Hutt AM
Jane Davisdon AM
Ian Bone :p
and numerous councillors and trade union leaders.

Was walking down Whitehall the other day - Cameron with a some mates walk past. he's a tall fcker. looked moneyed, posh, and very tense. only two other blokes with him in suits, no security etc, which surprised me.

Met loads of others or spoken to loads of others but can't remember names or I only found out after I'd spoken to them who they were

Condoleeza Rice I spoke to on the phone but she's not an MP but thought I'd chuck her in anyway :D

security isnt meant to be noticable :)

Went to a trade union dinner once, at the Wales TUC. Peter Hain was there, he was minister for Northern Ireland at the time. He had an armed body guard either side of him at his table, two more at the door making sure no undesirables got in and one sat in a bullet proof Range Rover outside, with the engine running. All in plain clothes but it was obvious what was going on.

That's no way to go through life.

Loads ----

Benazir Bhutto
Tito
Bill Clinton
Harold Wilson
& practically every front-bench Lab politican since--- plus a lot of others ----

I've just remembered, Baroness Gould when she lived in one of the flats in a converted church in Camberwell (where Vera Brittain nursed wounded soldiers in the war). That was for a possible gardening job.

Oh yeah met Nick Clegg once too, pissed him off by telling him to move the fuck out of the way of a photo that was being taken. :D

I once stayed in a hotel with Robin Cook. Would have loved to have met him as for my money he was one of the most intelligent politicians Labour has had, but it wasn't to be; I never even saw him whilst I was there.

I've probably met and talked to over 100 MPs over the last 30 years, mostly Labour and have probably seen a good 100 more speak at meetings. I considered myself a personal friend over many years of two Labour MPs in particular - one backbencher who I respected greatly, the other started with some principles but chose to climb the greasy pole and slid down later, still an MP but I haven't spoken to them for years, despite helping them significantly on their way for over a decade.

Met Brown a couple of years ago, while he was still Chancellor, and I chatted with him for a while with a group of others about an aspect of government policy. He was very pleasant, I think he's quite good at small group discussions and very personable especially with ordinary people rather than politicos - my disagreement is with his politics. Had lunch with Frank Field a few years ago and he was totally barmy but quite interesting too. If there was prize for "Off the Wall" MPs he'd win hands down. Have chatted or been in small meetings/committes with many other Labour MPs mostly while in opposition in the 80s and 90s - I knew Robin Cook well as I was on a working group with him that met at the House of Commons frequently, but also Livingstone, Blunkett, Stan Newens, and I'm afraid to say Jack Straw, and probably half a dozen others; spent three hours in a key small meeting (20 or so people) with Tony Benn back in his heyday in 1980s and many other chats. Had lunch with a local Labour MP in the House of Commons a couple of years ago on a sightseeing tour with a local interest group; he's barmy too but quite pleasant. Was embarassed when a local Tory MP came up to me in the Commons Dining Room and slapped me on the back asking how I was and how good it was to see me again (!) - I debated him many years ago at a big public meeting and put up quite a good show, but thought he'd forgotten me. I did have to spend a couple of hours with a very well known slimey Tory MP in the 1980s and was glad to see the back of him - fortunately for everyone he's out of politics now. Chaired a meeting with a local Labour MP and cabinet minister for an interest group just before the 2005 election - both complete Blairite loons who had no idea how to talk to ordinary people and are out of politics now (or will be soon).

I was in London once after the 2001 election drinking with a journalist I know when he invited me to a drinks party called by a Select Committee Chair at the House of Commons and chatted for a long time with a longstanding backbench Labour and LibDem MP both of whom were personable but not very interesting. I was a student with several people who are now MPs - Tory and Labour. Have worked closely with several (6 or 7?) of my local councillors who went on to become MPs later, mostly people with very few principles.

Worst MP I've had the misfortune to meet and talk to/argue with: Jack Cunningham - by a very long way.
