Not a footballer, but there was an article on the BBC (with usual crap framing) on how one of the gold medallists at the paralympics was in an armed Maoist group in the 70s/80s, lost use of his legs on hunger strike:http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/disability-sport/19529780

Precisely - "continues outstanding career at the vanguard of the proletariat" would have been a bit much to ask I expect, followed by a background para on the debate over vanguardism.

Obafemi Martins, the Nigerian international, currently playing for the Seattle Sounders and formerly of Inter and Newcastle, just announced his endorsement of Kshama Sawant, the Socialist Alternative candidate for Seattle City Council.

Seattle council is elected in city wide votes, with no constituencies, which makes it even more bizarre that Sawant made it through the open primary (effectively a first round to reduce the candidates to two) with 35% of the vote across the city. Socialist Alternative is the US sister organisation of the Socialist Party.

Puyol & Xavi sporting the Catalan flag after winning the world cup for Spain.

Puyol seems particularly keen to get on Spanish Nationalists' nerves

    Silva This went well.

Sinisa Mihajlovic is a Milosevic apologist nutjob, and I'm sure there are more former Yugoslav players who are the same, I guess a civil war does just that. There were stories of players here in the mid 90s (a lot of them just wanted out, had no existing professional contracts, so were very cheap to sign) that allegedly served as soldiers.

Top geezer and all round 'interesting' bloke Barton? Sounds like he might be mates with Di Canio

There's an obvious correlation between footballers/managers where they start off financially and class wise to where they end up. The prominent ones being millionaires/capitalists and how it relates to their later ideas and opinions. So, Ferguson can start off helping to bring fellow workers out on strike yet years later once a very wealthy man indeed and a boss in his own right a financial backer of Labour.

I wonder why they have comments turned off for that article?

Barnes is right that the FA and other powers don't care about structural society wide racism and that they will use high profile stuff like this to publicly polish their anti-racist badges - but he's coming close to saying that people angry at what happened to Toure, what happened to the U-21s is the same as that FA or UEFA or FIFA nonsense, when it's not. It's real, the pure across the board anger the night after that U21 game was astonishing - and it's that that will form the basis for challenges to the society or football wide stuff he mentions.

In the case of the first two pictures, I don't think people minded too much about Catalan flag-waving that week as they were just happy to have won. It even went both ways with rumour of Spanish flags being waved around in Barcelona itself (things have changed a lot in 3 years!). The last photo must be from the Athletic-Barça King's Cup Final at the Mestalla. The national anthem was booed by the entire stadium and I think Spanish TV either muted it or had a sudden "technical problem" and cut to test-card. Puyol is undoubtably playing to the assembled spectators on this occasion, but I'm not aware of him being remotely outspoken or especially politically except for his choice of flags in victory celebrations.
